I unremember how long my Corvette's been sat in a field, but it's at least 5 years. Anyway it's now sat in my garage. I've just been down there welding a broken chair from the cafe, & noticed the 'vette's new battery had finished charging. Well it would've been rude not to at least try, wouldn't it? About 2 seconds of cranking was all it took to fire, followed by a bit of chugging, then silence. Another bit of cranking, some more spluttering, then that lurvely V8 burble burble as smooth as you like. Idle's perfectly with no hint of any misfiring. All that on the same petrol that's been in there for lord knows how many years - significantly more than the 5+ it was sat in the field for. I is mostly very happy (unlike the swarm of *huge* spiders that emerged from all over the place). -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250
A 'reawakening' is great isn't it? Almost as good as the first start up after a reasonably big engine out rebuild. Your post reminds me that I need to get a can of super unleaded to gee the Nordwest up a bit. It starts OK but my experience with the Guzzli suggests it will perk up on fresher stuff - a dash of E85 might be fun if I can get my hands on any. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
Those small block Chevy motors may be old technology, but they'll run on the smell of an oily rag. Apparently there have been more Chevy 5.2litre motors made than any other engine in the history of internal combustion. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
They do that, don't they? I get very wary of poking into headlight shells of SOBs these days, because that seems to be one of their favourite nesting places.
Now there's an interesting thought. I'd have thought something like the old VW flat four would be up there. or maybe even the Honda C50/70/90 stepthru lump. There again, they did fit that engine into a hell of a lot of cars. Was the Rover V8 Chevy-derived? Actually, I think it was Buick. <Googles> Yes, it was.
In Surely not, the ubiquitous Honda 50/70/90 must have that accolade I'd have thought, that "fact" sounds like the type 'Merkins like to bandy around 'cos they only consider whats made in Merkinland.
Evil bloody things. The next step in the restoration is to get underneath & replace all the body mounts, rubber hoses & suspension. However that ain't happening 'til I figure out a way of getting rid of all the spiders. Anyone know if carbon monoxide kills them? If so, I'll just leave the 'vette running for a few hours. If not, any other suggestions gratefully received. My parents brought some smoke bombs back from the States once that killed anything that moved, but I've never seen them in this country. -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250
That may be true of the 5.7 (350cui). It has appeared in a hell of a lot of US & Aussie motors. -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250
But surely not as many as the flat four that's in Beetles, vans, Kubelwagens, various aircraft, water pumps, generators and the like? Even they must be trumped by the 50 million [1] Honda step thrus? [1] Is that number right?
Conkers. I'm sure I read that putting conkers in the places spiders congregate (such as air filters) stops them, er, congregating.

Krusty says... Agricultural machinery is like that, designed to plod along year after year with no maintenance or development.
Steve Parry says... Henry Ford invented the motor car[1], I know it's true because I read it in an American school book when I was working over there. [1] Not mass production of motor cars, but the motor car itself.
Whinging Courier says... SteveH had a Spider you could have swept out of his garage and taken home in a rucksack.
I wasn't thinking bikes TOG, but the small block topped 65 million units a few years ago, so they're probably neck and neck. Yeah, Buick 286cu (IIRC). That was an ali motor though, not an iron lump like the small block Chevy. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
I fitted an ex TVR (boed out Rover) V8 to a Transit van about 15 years ago. It ran faultlessly for the 7 years I kept it and I put 200,000miles + on it with nothing more than oil/filter changes for maintenance. I had Cobra sidepipes on it too, so I got the full brnt of that wonderful noise. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
I'd think that was a very conservative estimate. The Chevy small block numbers are up around the 65 million mark the last time I heard and that was a good few years ago. -- Beav VN 750 Zed 1000 OMF# 19
