Charming. How about this one, for those of us who still think that
    Australia isn't a xenophobic country?

Sounds like all he missed out on was the beating with a rubber
truncheon. And perhaps the torchlit lynching for Talking To Our
    Women.

Of course it was all his own fault for not being white enough to
travel on a French passport. :-(

Bloody hell. I didn't read this the first time around.
In the current political climate, they'll probably be
    awarded medals.

No. But are there any fundamentalist Christian countries that enforce any of
that stupidity ? The closest I'm aware of is a few places in the US having some
odd "county ordinances". On the other hand there are some fundamentalist Muslim
states which do enforce some of their stupid shit.

I don't really care how weird arse religious nutters get, as long as it's in a
secular state they can only hurt each other to a limited extent, when the church
gets sway over the judiciary then be afraid....

Well I'm pretty sure that bestiality is still a crime in most/all Australian
states. Likewise I think incest is also a crime in most/all Australian states
(Tassie could be the exception there). How many years do we have to go back
in history to find a time when adultery was also a crime? OK so the
punishments might not be as severe this century or last century, but we're
talking about laws written over 2000 years ago, so go back a few centuries...

Umm Nev, that's the point, there aren't any (that I am aware of) fundamentalist
christian countries. So there's nowhere ostensibly christian (for example) where
say, stoning an adulterer is ok, if I'm not mistaken that's one of the things
that's in the old testament. Fundy Christies don't get to pass their weird arse
laws, only the much tamer ones secular societies of all religious stripes tend
to go with. The fundy muslims have been better at getting control of the
    judiciary for whatever reason.

  17. Not that this will answer that presumably rhetorical question, but...

    1. Eve was Adam's second wife - the first was Lilith. Don't recall what
happened to her. [for the 'where's the reference?' crowd - I've read
numerous references to Lilith in other works, but no idea where in the OT
she appears, quite frankly never been interested enough to look Maybe she's
more a part of Jewish folklore than actually mentioned in the OT.]

    2. Adam and Eve had 2 kids at one stage, Cain and Abel. Cain killed Abel,
then, when he was kicked out of Paradise, wandered off and married a woman,
who's existence was never satisfactorily explained.

So there were other people around at times... when it suited the author.

(and with inconsistencies like these, the church expects you to take it as
fact? If I bought it as a work of fiction I'd have thrown it out...)

I'd like to know why this has happened to my country.

Or has it always been like this and I just never noticed?

What, Oz not liking non-whites? Ever heard of the White Australia
policy? The dictation test? Lambing Flat?

We sorta become OK for a while in the late 60s and early 70s, we allowed
darkish looking Europeans in, and even Asians, but I guess now we are
just going back to the old ways. Part of the Federation celebrations I
    expect.
