WinXP SP2 oddity?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Richard Sterry, Sep 1, 2004.

  1. Is it me?

After upgrading to WinXP SP2, I find that quite a few links within ng
postings don't work - just get the old "This page cannot be displayed" bit,
and the Address field in the resulting OE6 window is blank. However, cutting
and pasting the same link URL into the Address field works, as does clicking
on the very self-same link in someone's reply posting. I'm not sure, but it
usually seems to be the first occurrence of that link in a thread that
fails, but sometimes it works if I try again later. It isn't as simple as
whether or not there are leading ">" on the same line.

Under the "Please try the following" heading, it says...

"Open the s: home page, and then look for links..." (The "s:" is
    underlined.)

Seems like the URL is getting truncated/replaced by just "s:". Just can't
    figure it out!

    Anyone else seem this?

  3. You can guess what happened when I clicked on that link!

  4. Ditto with the browser.

You could do a lot worse than paying a visit to www.mozilla.org

  5. Aha, just had a thought - OE QuoteFix appears to be the guilty party.

No. It royally fucked my internet connection, so I've
since uninstalled it. Damn Windows Firewall kept turning
itself back on, even though I'd set it to off as I already
run ZoneAlarm. Plus it didn't like Norton either, and kept
moaning that I'd turned off auto-download of updates.

One reboot later and it just wouldn't connect to t'internet
at all, even though the other machines (non SP2'ed) could
    get out fine.

I've just seen it this morning, on my SP2 machine.

Thing is I wasn't clicking a link, I typed an IP in the address bar
    directly.......

SP2 seems to have broken more things than it's fixed. It's just the same
with a number of images based programs which it's completely fucked
    up...

Wonder if it's got an "I've got a fucking hardware firewall, you twat"
    setting?

My new laptop should rock up next week and out of habit I always patch
them up to the eyeballs. Given it'll be a clean install I don't
    anticipate too many problems.

OTW mine seems fine, with the 'firewall' locked to 'off'

'off' works OK for me. It's not exaclty an intuitive firewall to
configure. Pretty typically heavy handed approach IMHO.

  12. Oh dear. I haven't found anything that does work so far, but the cause of my
problem was definitely OE Quotefix. Uninstalling it fixed the problem,
reinstalling made the problem return. Pity. An email to the author(s) is in
    order, I think.

  15. I downloaded and installed SP2 the other day on my laptop. No problems
at all. I disabled the firewall(ICS) in the services and set auto-
updates to manual and everything's hunky dory.

Yes. Turn off the firewall and tick the box to say just that(ish). If you
just turn off the firewall then you get a nag flag in the toolbar every
    time you boot up.

Only problem I've had so far is with P2P. The standard TCPIP.sys file only
allows 10 concurrent connections. Shareazaa didn't like this. It's covered
in the help forum available from the Sharezaa drop down menus.

Why? Everything is working fine. Call me old fashioned but I try to do
things manually rather than run a wizard that takes eons.
