XP-home is not *exactly* like XP-pro, confusingly close but not exact.

It depends how deep you want to dig before you decide they are the same.
There are a few things which wont install or work under XP-home (eg: IIS)
without some hacking. This suggest that some critical components have not
been included or are configured differently. This difference can be enough
to cause the problems which TOG's daughter is experiencing.
**** it, the moon being full can be enough to cause a problem with Microsoft
    software! ;-)

My experience of both versions of XP is that XP-home didn't work properly
straight away without some tweaking but XP-pro worked straight off the
    (borrowed) CD.

I speak from personal experience. I confess that I don't know the intricate
workings of WindowsXP but in my experience the two versions are not
"exactly" the same which is the point I was trying to make.
If they *are* exactly the same then why are they sold as two different
    products?

I've had problems in my limited experience of XP-home which I haven't had
with XP-pro (maybe it was just limited driver support) and in my daily use
of XP-pro at work I've come across a few things which are only available
for XP-pro either via download from the Microsoft website or from the
    installation disk.

I use Office2000 at work and after reading a few other posts in this thread
I see that the problem may be related to Office2003 and not XP-home or
    XP-pro.

Welcome to the club, brother! ;-)

If Windows wont shut down normally I usually find it's a process which has
crashed and isn't responding to whatever gentle means Windows normally uses
    to close it.

Usually CTRL+ALT+DEL will either kill it or bring up a window which allows
you to kill the crashed process which, hopefully, will be marked "not
    responding".

Failing that, just turn the damned thing off and back on again and wait
while it checks the disk for errors.

I think you'll find most of TOG's Mac-related issues have come from the
various versions of OS9, which are acknowledged to be a bit wank.

I don't know what's wrong with my PC, it sits there doing nothing most
of the time, but just appears to hang up - neither letting me access it
via terminal serivces or directly, IYSWIM. Fucking heap of junk - it's
only a media server, but it's a PITA when you have to get off the sofa
    to reboot it.

Should have bought a Mac Mini.

99% [1] of 'Windows' problems are caused by 3rd party drivers, &
nothing to do with Windows itself or Microsoft. Comparing with a Mac is
pointless as Windows has to run on billions of combinations of
hardware, using drivers written by thousands of different hardware
    manufacturers.

I've never had any stability problems with any version of Windows when
using the default Microsoft 'get up & running' drivers. However things
frequently go tits up once I start loading new drivers. nVidia drivers
for Win2k were a prime example, & one they never fixed. My new XP64
install has now gone all wonky after installing the ATI x64 Catalyst
drivers - it was fine with the 'base' driver.

I don't know what's wrong with your Dell, but I'd put my money on dodgy
memory or the graphics driver. Check if reducing the graphics hardware
acceleration fixed it - Display Properties - Settings - Advanced -
    Troubleshooting (or something like that).

[1] Made-up statistic alert, but I bet it's not far off the mark.
