Windows/Office problem

  1. OK, daughter has a nice brand new Dell.

MS Office, including Word Office 2003.

When she tries to copy and paste text from a web page, word crashes and
freezes. Only way to get out is to right-click on the app, select quit -
and then it says the program is not responding, says there's an error
message that it wants to report, and spends ages preparing it. It never
gets as far as sending it.

Softare came from PC World. Pooter cam,e obviously, from Dell. I have a
suspicion that Dell will say "It's a software problem; nothing to do
with us." and PC World will say: "Not out problem..."

Right - any ideas, as I've got a daughter on the verge of tears as she's
blown all her dosh on this thing and it's fucked within a week.

  2. Has she downloaded all the updates for the office programme from Microsoft
    ?

She should have a customer support number for Microsoft , i think you get
    two free support calls .

The Older Gentleman emerged from their own little world to say
When copying & pasting text from a web page I tend to use the edit drop
down menu and select "paste special". You'll get another menu. I usually
    select "paste as unformatted text".

Oh, and tell her to write her own coursework rather than plagiarise stuff
off the web like motorcycling journalists.

My Office '03 started to do that once.

I would suggest you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and look
at the top of the screen there should be an "Office Family" button to
click which will let you go to the Office Update site.

You can install the updates from there. Hopefully that should help.

Download all available Windows updates from Microsoft. Then download the

I'm guessing it's XP-Home not XP-Pro. The former is utter crap.
Isn't there still a law where a retailer can't sell something "not of
merchandisable quality"? Would you accept such shite quality from a bike or
    car?

Alternatively try Firefox, Mozilla or Opera (I prefer Opera) and see if they
don't cause Word to crash when she copies and pastes text. If she's using
Internet Explorer she needs to bear in mind that it is considerably out of
    date.

The product quality isn't an issue. An application works in its
native environment. If you start sticking on spyware, virus checkers,
games and the like then things can stop working.

Also, new cars and bikes still have things wrong with them, but they
can be fixed. Same with applications. Microsoft and various bits of
advice gathered from internet will help fix the problem. If it still
doesn't work then one can call Microsoft (unless it's an OEM product)
for advice or Dell (If it's an OEM product) who will offer to help.

  8. It's firewalled and AV'd up (Norton, etc, installed by Sniper)

This is just fucking unbelievable. I've been running Macs for years with
no sort of problems worth mentioning - daughter gets a PC, and the first
    simple task fritzes it.

  9. Did you fix it by what you've outlined below?

    Worth a try.

Just to balance things out, I've got a newish Dell running XP and
Office 2003 and it works perfectly.

Not that that helps you much.

You may find that word is trying to start itself off in 'web page
edit' mode and requiring some sort of add-in that may not have been
    installed.
Chuck the install CD back in, check for additional 'translation' and
    'web' stuff, and reinstall it.
Other than that, I'd go with wessie on the 'paste as unformatted
text', or alternatively paste via notepad.

I'd remove Norton for a start[1] as it's a POS but failing that at
    least disable it.

    [1] Then install AVG Free

Thats that wonderfull, world popular MS Windows for you...
Did she but direct from Dell or is it second hand ?
If from Dell, was the OS not already installed ?
Was Word bought from PC World ?

To prove it is Word, take a copy of OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/
and repeat the excercise. If it does not crash, it is word. If it does it
    is MS Windows.

Should have bought a Mac :)

  16. We're talking a language I wot not of.

I know FA about PCs and Windoze. For nearly a decade I've been 100% Mac,
and never had worries. Now I understand why people moan about MS stuff.

Yes, this works. Thanks both. It's a work-around for the moment.

Now we've got to find out why it's gone wrong in the first place.

Wot he said. Nowadays Norton is a Symantec brand, installs shitloads of
Symantec dross that's harder to get rid of than some vira.

  20. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, platypus
I tossed it when they put the annual subscription up to 25 notes.

AVG is doing the job nicely now for nowt.
