Why the K1100 didn't pop a fuse

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, May 5, 2011.

  1. Because, I've just learned, the sidestand cut-out circuit was unfused.
The circuit runs from the ignition switch, via the kill switch and
    sidestand switch.

BMW changed the wiring from July 1993 on, with Motronic 2.2, so I bet
someone else had a similar problem at some point.

I've by-passed the sidestand switch altogether now.

Andy B - you might want to do the same on your RS. I can show you how,
if you want. It's a piece of piss.

I'd be gobsmacked if the ignition switch isn't fused, though.

Shame I couldn't convince Pip to put that spare spring clip we found
under your final drive to give you something to worry about ;-)

  5. Me too. I'd look at a wiring diagram, but electrics, for me, are....

If you've got one scanned in, lob it over and I'll have a look. But I am sure
I don't really have to, not fusing the ignition switch would be a recipe for
potentially lots of expensive electrical fires.

Join the club. I had to do all the electrics on my VN750 and although
everything worked, I'm still trying to figure out how. It certainly wasn't
brilliance on my part and as an athiest, it couldn't have been a miracle, so
    it must've been pure luck.

yes, I was told (by you I think)
but that didn't stop everyone (felt like everyone) asking me if I'd lost any
    oil yet!

I was similarly gobsmaccked to discover that the seat doesn't have to
come off the GL18 to change the fairing panel.

Everything else, does, though, but not the seat.

  10. Thanks for the offer, but like you say, it's got to be fused. It's just
the kill circuit that isn't. Or wasn't, when they built mine.

I'll check to see if mine's fused because it's a later bike but I'll
certainly bypass the switch if I can because that switch cuts out a lot
more circuits than just the engine.

  12. If it's like mine, behind the right-hand panel, at the top, by the frame
rail there are two connectors. One's sort of cylindrical: the other is
    squarish, and a two-pin jobbie.

That's the sidestand cut out. Unplug it, make up a short length of wire
with a connector at each end, and plug that into the male connector, one
    end on each 'prong'.

That does the trick. Then cover in self-amalgamating tape, my new
    favourite plaything.

So the GW seat is the clutch & battery equivalent to early K-series
    BMWs?

In terms of the sequence of assembly of the bike :)

Thanks. I'll have a look at the weekend and if it's the same I'll chop
    it out.

I'll make sure Steve Packer knows as well because he's had issues with
his sidestand switch and brake lights...

In my quest for even fewer weight when rebuilding the Ex-Blaney CBR600
into something worth hooning round race circuits, I've chopped huge
amounts of cable and the Spyball alarm from the original wiring loom
and made an extra special effort to terminate all the redundant cables
safely. After getting the new gearchange rod fitted I started the bike
and went to give it a little ride around the hardstanding where my
garages are... put the bike in gear and the engine cut. Bloody
sidestand switch has been removed and the cables in the loom needs
shorting out to let the engine run.

I spent all yesterday afternoon stripping the wiring loom apart trying
to find the errant cables so I could connect them together. Trouble
was, I couldn't remember roughly where in the loom the sidestand switch
wires were cut back to, so had to untape about two foot of it before I
found them. Bastard job that was.

I found some fellow's website with K1100 wiring diagrams:

    http://smithduck.home.comcast.net/~smithduck/bmw/kwiring/kwiring.htm

And quite surprisingly, it appears that the ignition switch (if his
diagrams are correct, which they may not be) is NOT fused.

    See page 1:

    http://smithduck.home.comcast.net/~...LT_1993_Wiring/K1100LT_93_Wiring_Diagrams.pdf

Possibly, some of the wiring shown may contain fusible links, but
there's no discrete fuse shown between the (+) battery terminal and the
    ignition switch.

I'd like to see the factory manual wiring diagram before accepting
that one, though- I think it's copied from a Clymer manual or something
    iffy like that.

I can't even see the ignition switch marked on that :-/
Well, I imagine Clymer copied it from the factory manual. I can't see
them disassembling a loom and drawing up their own.
