Why not?

Why do motorcycles with centrestands not have a locking capability, like
    a steering lock, only stronger?
It wouldn't be easy moving a big bike with its centrestand still down
    and locked.
    Just a thought.

Cos bikes that have centre stands aren't worth nicking.

Thanks for that piece of advice; I'll leave my bike outside my gaff
from now on safe in the knowledge that the local, nick-anything
    oxygen-wasting scum will disregard it.

    Then again, maybe not...

These had locking main stands and from what I recall they were prone to
siezing due to salt ingress etc. Plus they were that ugly no one wanted
    to nick em anyway :)

You've had ZZR1100's, with centre stands.

It would be very easy to pick it up & chuck it in a van, which is how
most bikes are nicked anyway. Plus lopping the legs off would only take
a few seconds with a battery powered angle grinder or gas axe, and
probably only a minute with a hacksaw.

  12. Because the locks would get gummed up, corroded or wrecked with road
crap, chain lube, you name it, within days.

And who wants to grovel around the underside of a bike every time they
    lock it?

It would be part of a nice actuator controlled central locking/Tracker
system! I dunno why we think such things are difficult or unlikely when
one considers the sophistication and convenience built into most cars.

I am amazed that they can build something as highly developed as, say, a
GSXR1000 yet can't put a centrestand on the fucking thing.

Utterly shite planning, engineering and execution is what.
I suppose it is down to low production levels and short product lives. I
guess one can compare a TVR Tuscan. Lots of looks and performance but no
    convenience.
I wouldn't put up with a 100th of the niggles incurred on bikes if it
was my cage. In fact my current cage is going after 18 weeks because the
new Tip Auto box has poorly spaced ratio's and an amateur downchange. I
have been living with faaaaar worse from BMW bikes for 25 years!

Bollocks. The lack of a centrestand is, at worst, a minor
inconvenience when it comes to chain lubing. But I don't know what
else you'd describe in that way. I suppose you find it 'inconvenient'
that the bars were too low for you, the screen not big enough, not
much underseat storage, no fitted luggage, etc. etc.

Go buy a tourer if you want more 'convenience'. Me, I'm more than
happy with the convenience levels of this thing I call a 'sports
    'bike.

Which rather misses the point that all these things *could* be done but
they don't bother. In particular the riding position, seat/bar/peg
    should be somewhat adjustable.

Umm well yes, excepting that 1999 Ducati 996. Other than the tip of the
steering damper rod it was utterly corrosion free after two winters of
    Oxford-London commute and no garage.
