  2. D'you think it should have been lower or higher? I answered the
questions as honestly as I could, although I was ver ver drunk at the
    time.

[I was posing here previously under my real name, but I'm paranoid that
some people I work for google for my name and read my innermost secrets,
which I don't much like the idea of]
    That'll do nicely, ta!

That may be a statisticians' trick, though I'm not quite sure
    what they're doing here.

Instead of doing tests with answers from 1 to 3, they do them
with answers from 1 to 5 to get people to express some view
rather than marking in the middle.

    Eg
"George W Bush is a dangerous fuckwit".

    Do you
    - Agree
    - Neither agree nor disagree
    - Disagree

    can be recast as:

"George W Bush is a dangerous fuckwit".

    Do you
    - Strongly agree
    - Agree
    - Neither agree nor disagree
    - Disagree
    - Strongly disagree.

The latter will get fewer "Neither agree nor disagree"
responses. For analysis purposes, the "Strongly agree" and
"Agree" can be lumped together, ditto with the ones on the other
side. The five-way split is used as a trick to open up the data
    for a three-way analysis.

    Now, why they do a 4-way split on a 2-way test, I don't know.

    <thinks>

Maybe it helps where people aren't sure what to put, and would
otherwise skip the question altogether? In which case skipping
the question (or abandoning the test) would be equivalent to
    "Neither agree nor disagree" above?

I thought I would be more systematic as I am considered to be very
logical and analytical. Still I have a male brain so that's something.

  11. It isn't - as a boss you have a big impact on people in terms of how
they spend the rest of their day, how they feel, whether they like
their work, their career prospects, how they wish to develop themselves
etc etc. All this then springs back onto their families and friends. I
am always amazed to hear the extent to which my actions or those of
bosses generally get discussed and passed round. I assume no one is
really interested in what I say or do but the reality is the complete
opposite. Given that level of interest you then have a responsibility
to act well and fairly and to set a good example to others.
Oh well there's another world record - I agree with Porl.

The more time I spend as a manager with a team of decent people working
for me the more I realise how hard it is to be a *good* manager. There
are so many facets to the role that if you want to do the right thing by
your people and hope / expect they will reciprocate then you will feel
yourself stretched in all sorts of directions. The more I do the more I
realise and appreciate the inadequacies in my personality - the worst
one being my high level of self reliance and independence which is at
the cost of social interaction and friendship. My shortcomings in that
area make me less effective as a manager and boy, is it hard to deal
    with.

  13. Rob - you aren't managing a network of PCs with on / off buttons. You're
managing people - I find it amazing to read your words about "take
action a for time period b. At the end of time period b the subject will
be able to return to full functionality." While I have immense levels
of self will to be able to create the impression of maintaining my
productivity at high levels I can actually be on the edge of jacking the
whole thing in. The reality is that my performance will not be optimal
because it is only that when I am happy in my work.

A decent boss would be perceptive enough to know what was going on
underneath and the relationship should be good enough to be able to have
a one to one chat about how I'm really feeling. The boss should also be
astute and caring enough to be able to provide a balanced decision that
manages the needs of the business and the individual without conflict.

Drunk, now there's an idea <looks in cupboard> vodka or mead <looks in

Mead it is then. About an inch should do it.
I don't care. I posted for years under my real name. That was then,

Even as non-empathic automaton, I doubt very much whether ANYTHING you
do for a living is worth harming someone's feelings over.

It's only a fucking job, and doing it wrong or late won't kill anyone.
It's certainly not worth making someone ill for. Including you.
Exactly: I don't understand it, and it doesn't come naturally, but I
can see that it needs attention paying to it - I just can't do it
    without thinking.
