Why do the innocent parties come off worse?!?

Me too. As I said elsewhere, I was surprised at my EQ score, cos I
thought I was at least "average" (for a bloke) at this stuff.

  3. Yeah, but that sounds like quite hard work. Whinging and shouting is
easier (I don't have to do it all that often).
Sometimes I do more than expected by accident, sometimes I do more
because it's easy and/or it may lead to getting more work in the future,
and sometimes I just feel like it. But I never deliver less than what's
been agreed, partly due to pride in my work and partly due to fear of
not being paid. Doesn't matter to me whether the person I'm working for
is nice or (in my opinion) a w*nker.
Woohoo! What do I win? :)

You said "that's not about feelings" while talking about "someone who
is ill, has family problems, whatever"

    It is.
You know how we used to wonder if auvache was a bot. I'm wondering if
you are, because this sentence doesn't seem to fit /at all/ into this
post - in that it bears no relevance to the posts you are responding
    to.
"manage" has already been defined elsewhere in this thread. The other
definitions are much more grown-up (not to mention articulate) than
    yours.
This is another sentence out of nowhere. Who said that "emotion" was
exclusive to management? You really think that "emotion" is about
    "acting fairly"?

It means you're normal for this parish?

Do I get extra points for looking at the scoring system on the AQ test
and finding fault with it? They make no distinction between definitely
and slightly so why bother with 4 choices? It should just be agree or
    disagree.

No, I believe that to act fairly our decisions should be as far removed
from emotion as is humanly possible.

    How I pine for a Ginge-like manager.

With my current specimen it's *all* about keeping everyone happy and
results seem to come a long way down the priority list. Decisions don't
    get made without unanimous agreement[1]

[1] There are 3 superfluous words there. See if you can spot them.

    Oh missed this bit..
    No it's not.

The basis should be an individuals reduced productivity due to the
current issue. By limiting stress for a short term period they are
better able to maintain their personal well being and mental health,
thus keeping productivity high once the issue is resolved.

That decision that can be taken with absolutely no emotional involvement
    at all.

And so the following from Rob which you didn't address follows...

To which I'd add that the only thing in this crazy universe we have
any chance of controlling in a meaningful way is ourselves. It is an
individual's responsibility to make the work/life balance work.
Personally, I know where my priorities lie.
In what way? The discussion has side tracked to the issue of a worker
in a large corporation with emotional stress (leaving aside the whole
stress in work and the soulnessless of working for someone other than
yourself for the moment) In that context it fits perfectly - it is up
to the individual to manage their life. It is up to the manager to get
the best from their team, in this instance as Rob said above by giving
them extra space, support etc. But ultimately if the outside stress is
such that there is a detriment to both work and life then the
individual needs to take a long hard look at what they are doing with
their life. This isn't easy, is often painful, involves change (oo
scary) and so a lot of people simply don't do it until something snaps
    and forces them to.

Am I? Didn't really check other scores, and according to their tables
it appeared to be a fairly low score. Lemme see..
.... well, I'm below darsy and below porl, does that mean anything bad?
