Why do the innocent parties come off worse?!?

  1. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "AndrewR"
Spiro Agnew, now there was a name to conjure with. I recall nothing
about the man, just the name.

Not a VP, but I do recall seeing Buzz Aldrin being interviewed after
one of the shuttle mishaps, where he was introduced as "Buzz Aldrin -
the second man on the moon". You'd imagine that might get a bit
    tiresome after a while.

I only know because I downloaded last week's HIGNFY and the ginger twat
was the host, so they had to show that clip.

I dunno, still a fairly unique achievement. Only what, a dozen, managed
    it.
To actually stand on the surface of a different planet. Mind you, half
the fuckers on newsnet manage that every day.

How did a dozen people manage to be the second man on the Moon? Did they
all jump out of the lander at once?
I'll certainly agree that Usenet is rich in people who'd benefit from a
brisk 10 minute stroll on the surface of Venus.

    <Bad form>

I actually Googled for this and there have only been 6 such VPs[1] in my
life time, so I'm pretty surprised that I knew 5 of them.

Mind you, glancing through the list produces a host of names that I've never
heard of ... Hubert Humphrey, Alben Barkley, Henry A. Wallace, John Nance
    Garner, Charles Curtis.

Just shout up if any of these names sound at all familiar you know.

[1] Cheney (although he may yet get to be Prez, of course), Gore, Quayle,
    Mondale, Rockefeller and Agnew.

Yeah, Rockefeller surprised me too, still, I was only 6 when he stopped
    being VP.

Mondale I only knew of because of "Where's the beef"?[1] To loop back to an
earlier topic, which is worse; having your political career remembered for a
mistake or being long outlived by your own slogan?

[1] And, as an avid Simpsons fan, I also new that he represented
    Minnesota[2].
[2] The quote "Where's the beef" was the headline on the newspaper that
Marge saved on the day Lisa was born in "Lisa's first word".

IIRC there was a lot of pre-mission arguing over who was to be
first, and a lot of post-mission upsetness on his part over that
label. Silly really, given the magnitude of the achievement, but
that's the Yank winner-takes-all attitude in action.

Did a PhD on orbital mechanics, IIRC, and was the first one to
work out how to reliably arrange a rendezvous in orbit.

His other big achievement IIRC was working out how to do useful
things while spacewalking. Previous spacewalking achievements
    had been limited to
    a) floating around saying "Hey, this is cool!"
or b) floating around saying "Shit! I can't do anything other
than float around, my visor's misting up, and I'm not sure I can
be certain of getting back in the spacecraft"

Aldrin changed all that on Gemini 12.
