Why didn't anyone tell me bike indicators don't self-cancel?

I'd forgotten about BMWs. I can recall trying to judge *exactly* when
to hit the switch so they cancelled just after I exited onto a slip
    road.

ISTR that BMW ones weren't as good as Yamaha ones (I think mine
canceled a fraction early when taking slip roads off dual
carriageways), but I can also recall disconnecting the self-canceller
box on my XS and not missing the SC function except on the very rare
occasions when I forgot to cancel manually.

Don't worry about it - any self respecting newbie would immediately
remove the indicators and mirrors as soon as they got the bike home.
And don't forget the broomstick up the baffle either.

I've heard bikes pass that had audible indicators: they're bloody
    annoying for passers by.

  5. As Hog says, no. That was the audible bleeping indicators. Yamaha's were
always silent (and, IMHO, the best).

Admit it, you were following me weren't you? ;-)

I found myself doing exactly this which annoyed me as I know it's bad for a lot of reasons.
I think you're spot on with the cause. I think I was hugging the crown of the road too closely and, as you suggest, probably stopping too close to the junction.

I'll follow your advice in my next lesson.

    Cheers.

My old 125, POR Apache (Don't laugh....), had audio indicators but they
were basically useless. Through a helmet they were too quiet to hear at
any speed over stationary, but if they were any louder they'd be much
too loud when stopped and would just piss off everyone in the area.

My Fizzy was one up, four (or was it just three?) down.

The other NtNOCN one I liked was the
flashing-light-on-a-stick-on-the-head aid for the deaf to let them know
    that the telephone was ringing.

Was it? IIRC it was just 4 and all in the same direction (down)?

Ah, you could be right and I am getting more senile than I thought! I
do remember that going "up" the box was actually down.

You'd think someone would have done something clever with a bluetooth linked
beeper in the helmet by now.

I would've thought that having the brake under the right foot, makes it a
little easier for car drivers to get to grips with, and vice versa. That's
probable not the reason, but wibble flip..

I know that when I rode my first Jap bike back in the 60's, I almost ended
up under a British Oxygen artic when I went to change up in a mad rush to
beat the truck as I crossed its path and pushed down on the fucking brake
instead, coz it was on the "wrong" side. Oddly, I *still* have to think
about which side it's on occasionally.
