    AIUI:
    In the UK spring officially starts on the vernal (?) equinox, 21st of March
    +/- a day or so.
    Oddly enough, midsummer's day being the summer solstice, 21st June +/- a day
    or so, is actually the first day of summer officially.
    Autumn starts on the autumnal equinox, 21st September +/-
    Winter on the winter solstice, 21st December +/-
    Weird init?

    Spring starts with the first crocuses unfloding their bright little
    flowers to the morning sun. Summer when it finally stops raining. The
    start of Autumn depends whether we have a summer or not and can
    therefore be anytime between early April and late August and Winter
    starts when Autumn gets windy as well as wet.
