The recent post on moving a bike in Sydney made me think - when you're out
there in butt-**** nowhere and your bike breaks down, who do you call? Do
any of you knowledgeable folk have a contact number for a motorcycle
recovery service? Will the NRMA come out to bike?

    Thanks

if you have the bike covered with them, the NRMA will come, but if it's
miles from anywhere you take potluck as to whether the local contractor
can handle it or no. Not all that many country depots have access to
    flatbed towtrucks.

Ghostriders will come to about 100km out of Sydney I think, but you will
    pay for it. Lots.

I've had a Kawasaki do its camchain, but I was able to get as far as
a servo and then persuade a truckie to take me and it (in defiance of
company regs) to Adelaide. Being young and female probably helped.

When Bill Martin's 851 Tricolour decided to quit charging the battery
on the way back from the GP one year, we swapped his flat one for my
charged one, push started my Pantah, and were able to struggle in to the
nearest town where a motel owner agreed to keep the bike[1] until Bill
was able to return the next weekend with a car and trailer and pick it up.

Moral of the story is have a bike that you can fix most problems on,
and if you can't get it going enough to get to civilisation, then start
    walking...

A broken 851 in the motel .... "Nice to see you again, sir, your usual room
    is vacant"

  6. I had a stack about half-way between Singleton and Muswellbrook once.

A guy from singleton towies came out with a flat-bed (and got hit by a truck
on the way!) and took me into town. He didn't charge me anything for the
overnight storage, found me a room at a pub, and let me use his tools etc to
fix the bike the next day. He even welded the handlebar back together for me
free of charge. Out in the country you will find a lot of nice people so
long as you treat them nicely.

    So in summary

    1. Ride a bike that's easy to fix
    2. Be friendly to the locals
    3. For special favours, be extra friendly!

Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. Thanks for the input.

"butt-**** nowhere" is about 20K from Horsham
    it's other name is Pimpinio

the combined resources of RAA and RACV provided me
with a rescue trailer from Horsham

  11. 400 k's is just up the track mate. The NRMA low loadered, along with a big
cat fishing boat from Darwin, my trike over 2,400km to
nearest-they-could-get to home. They even paid for the crane hire to lift it
off the back onto my waiting trailer. And Mt. Isa is nowhere near the middle
    of _bum_-**** nowhere!
