When are you going to "realise" that TOG, is almost certainly even more
    clueless that you are?

And even sillier sod won it for £530.

And I've just noticed that the whizzo restoration didn't extend to
    putting a sidestand on it.

And the front guard is one of those pattern things - nowt wrong with
them per se, but I'd at least cut off the mounting bracket extension
that bears the additional mounting holes for larger front wheels.

A rear mudguard would have been nice, too.

I wonder what the lucky auction winner will do when/if he discovers that
    he's bought a messed-with XS250 and not a genuine XS400?

To convert a 250 to a 400, all you need to do is bore out the barrels. I
think the carbs are the same. However, the 400 has a different
crankshaft with a different balance factor, to allow for the higher
reciprocating weights, and thus a simple bore-out means the bugger
vibrates even worse than normal. A straight engine swap, of course, is a
    different kettle of fish.

  9. Do you think when he goes looking for other pervs, he plays "sub"? It
    would explain a lot.

Maybe this forum is the only place where you can find others who have
    even less knowledge than you?

Ok then Andy m8.............would you or TOG be able to rebuild a
spoked wheel accurately, or make a professional repair on a broken set
    of crankcases?

Lets get away from the toss you post on here, and see if either of you
can actually do anything in real world terms!

Either of these bikes are utter and complete crap...............the 250
would probably be better as insurance would be cheaper!

  13. I can't remember if sweller ever flogged his XS400.

I quite liked the couple I owned, in a sort of ShiteOldWorkingBike way.
The engines were definitely torquier than most other 400 twins of the
era (the Z400/440 was an honourable exception[1]), and they didn't
handle badly, but the weak electric start was always the bike's Achilles
heel. At least they fitted a kickstarter.

[1] That one I ran for a year or so was a *lovely* little hack. You may
remember Petrolcan bought it, and then some nameless shit nicked it.

  14. Wotcha.
How about a professional repair to a casting, which then needed lacing to a
    wheel rim ?

Sometimes it's a case of having to do it.

Looks an excellent job...........having some castings done at the mo,
in regard to tooling for making alloy tanks.

Weird that. I owned an XS400 and a 400N, I prefered the Honda. I also
owned a rat-bike XS250 for 3 years. Slow as ****, and took forever to
start unless fitted with B8EV plugs, but it was one of the most reliable
bikes I ever owned. I liked the 250 more than the XS400, I always
thought the chassis wasn't up to 400 performance, but could just cope
    with the 250 lump.

I did both of these last year. I'm pretty sure both TOG and Andy can
    too.
    I can, and regularly do.

  18. Being honest, I have never attempted a wheel rebuild and I have no
welding skills. However, I wouldn't consider these the be-all and
end-all of bike restoration. I've lost count of the number of engines
    and bikes I've rebuilt.

And I've owned 300-odd bikes in the last 30 years, of course.
    <AOL>

You look back on some projects and think: "That was worth it...". Like
the 400 Four, and sorting out the camchain tensioner by going in through
the sump, which is *definitely* not a solution mentioned by Honda or
    haynes in their respective manuals...

And you look back on others and think: "What a waste of time that
was..." Like the CB500T. I see some classic dealer has got one up for
grabs at about £1500. What's sad is that some twonk may buy it.

    £261 on ebay - bloody cheap for a 400 with 12 months ticket I can't
remember if it had tax - I may have got £350 ish in the local Friday-Ad.

Probably right for the dog that it was. Awful thing.
