MOTORCYCLE star Anthony Gobert has been banned from central Surfers Paradise
after an alleged 'crime rampage' - including the robbery of a 70-year-old
    man.

Gobert was one of Australia's top motorbike racers in the 1990s and early
2000s, winning an Australian superbike championship and eight world
    superbike races.

But he was dubbed the sport's 'Wild Child' as his career spun out of
    control.

Now unemployed, the 33-year-old faced Southport Magistrate's Court today
charged with two counts of stealing.

Police alleged that on Tuesday, he snatched two $20 notes from the hand of a
70-year-old man at a Coles supermarket checkout in Surfers Paradise.

The following day, he allegedly snatched a woman's purse on the streets of
    Surfers.

I remember him[1], but I thought he was older than that. Wikipedia verifies
that he was the one who won a unique WSB race for Bimota (which was normally
miles behind everyone else) in a
    it's-wet-and-we're-the-only-ones-with-the-right-tyres race, not too long
before the company went bust. I thought the bike had the GSXR and not the TL
    engine.

Shame about the waste of talent, stealing from old ladies rather than riding
    getaway bikes in bank robberies.

[1] Early to mid-nineties were the only time I followed major motorsports
properly. I presume it was the years we had Eurosport available around here
without the need of a sat dish.

I remember him pretty well. He had an amazing raw talent on a bike.
But it looks like his true purpose is to provide living proof that it
takes more than talent to be succesful.

  5. He was amazing when he burst on the scene. His younger brother is
quite a good rider and less likely to get on the pot.

I recall interviewing Anthony when he was in Tasmania while I was
making a documentary about a motorcycle tour/comp week of the state.
It was a combination of touring and competition ... ah **** it -
    here's the link
    http://www.ma.org.au/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Current4&Template=/CM/HTMLDisplay.cfm&ContentID=3495

It only lasted a couple of years unfortunately.

Anyway, I'm interviewing Gobert in a pub after dragging him out of
another pub up the road and asked him "What do you think of Tasmania's
touring roads?". "Dunno mate, I don't have a road licence'.
WTF? But it seems he has never had a road licence. Weird.
That floored me and totally threw my line of questioning for the rest
    of the interview.

Anthony really fucked up about 3-4(?) years ago when he was managing
to resurrect his career by riding for Suzuki in the US in their
domestic superbike series and got done for cannabis a few times to the
point where the team kicked him out.

My earliest recollection of him was on a Kawasaki I think, at
Donnington (or whichever UK racetrack has a corner called Melbourne)
where he was backing the bike into corners like it was a dirt bike. I
was sure he was going to bin it or **** his tyres but he just kept
    doing it lap after lap.

So, yeah - it's a shame to see a talent go to waste like that. Doohan
was a party animal like Gobert in his early days, but Doohan made the
    choice to focus. Pity Gobert didn't . . .
