    Anyone read it?

We were given a copy at a conference today, and want to know if it's as
good as people reckon it is, 'cos I can't be arsed to read it otherwise.

It's like all those other wanky self-help books: a one sentence idea
    expanded to death.

As with all self help books it's just common sense.

    I don't need self-help books.
it's probably a load of old shit.

But, if we're doing UKRM Book Club, I can recommend the following:

Noam Chomsky : "Hegemony or Survival : America's Quest for Global
    Dominance"

    John Kampfner : "Blair's Wars"

    Jay McInerney : "Brightness Falls"

    Richard Morgan : "Market Forces"

    warning: all a bit depressing.

    agrees with BB shocker

They can also give $250 four hour lectures on that one sentence.

I quite like PD Ouspensky : "The psychology of Man's Possible Evolution"

Some recent books that are well worth a look:

John Dickie, Cosa Nostra: A history of the Sicilian Mafia (very solid,
not sensationalist and, from what I've read in Italian books and
    papers, accurate);

Eoin McNamee: The Ultras (novel based on Robert Nairac; bit arty but
he seems to have the atmosphere just right)

Not recent, but I've only read them recently:

Eric Hobsbawm, Age of [revolution | capital | empire | extremes]
    (history from 1789 to 1991)

Martin Walker, The cold war (what it says on the cover)

Ah - you're not that insane and unreasonable that there isn't some
    common ground...
If I was paying for an after-dinner speech, or something like that,
I'd far rather get someone interesting and funny than some self-help
or management "guru". Has anyone come across any /good/ people of
that type, or am I just a cynic?

We had a guy speak to us who was ex-SAS and (at the time) was the
youngest Brit to go up Everest. Can't remeber his name, but by God he
had a room of 250+ people hooked. Some of it was very moving, some
funny as f**k - best speaker I've ever heard. Not any "so you all play
as a team now" bo**ocks, just a real inspiration.

See, that I'd be interested in. Someone's who led an interesting
life, done interesting stuff. And, ideally, can talk about it all
    with wit and wisdom.

We had a conference recently about learning. It was interesing, funny and
    very well presented.
I came out feeling pleased with myself and inspired.
Problem is, the things that he was really passionate about would have to
take a back seat because of the system that is Ofsted!

It was featured briefly in a recent episode of "2 pints of lager...." on
Beeb 2 as a rather obvious statement on how wanky these self-help books can
    be.....

    If that's any help.

I saw it on the recent docusoap about Estate Agents. Looked like a bag
o' shite to me, but I suppose I should read it if it's been handed out
    to us, IYSWIM.
