I think driving the mechanic to drink is somewhat optional but the
resistance to fix is a slightly more well-known phenomenon.
Probably the best thing to do...

Oh yeah, I don't slow down for those, apart from one road where they're
too wide to straddle at all & have edges resembling the north face of
the Eiger. The fire brigade & ambulance service have been particular
vocal about them, but the 'think of the children' morons won the battle.
That's what most of the ones round here are like. Evil bloody things in
    something with hard suspension.

Not driven a Fabia or the 1.9TDi Octavia. The lowish revs grunt of the
2.0TDi PD140 is wonderful though. Very easy to get the little traction
loss light lit if you want to. Handling competent, if not exactly
chuckable, for a largish estate (I wonder if the rear springing is a bit
stiffer?). The brain is telling me the variable servicing demands a
first service at 18000 (about 500 miles to go). Only problem so far has
been a loss of reversing sensor display which seemed to be linked to the
battery flattening. Traced to a bad multipin junction in the wiring loom
underneath at the back somewhere apparently.

It does make a very acceptable long distance load lugger IMO, and you
get toys like cruise control and dual zone climate control on the
Elegance. You can hustle it along and make decent progress on the
twisties without too much drama. The mid-range poke is v. useful for
overtaking when pulling a bike trailer.

Not that I have much to rate it against as it is the second most
powerful car I have owned. Not by a lot though as the CRV and the 75 2.5
V6 were there or thereabouts the same within 10Bhp. Three very different
    vehicles though.

I know the type he means, they've got them at my local B&Q. If I went
over them at any more than a walking pace, I'd damage my wheels.

But I have 17in wheels with low profile tyres, not a 4x4.

Weekday evenings. Obv. the place is never going to be completely empty,
but if you avoid weekends and bank holidays the Brent one isn't too bad
    at all.

Still my idea of hell on earth, mind.
