One of which has the 2.8 V6 Turbo, out of the Saab. :)

IME (and I have been in a few, plus I've had several 99s and pre-GM
900s) it is not something that you need to experience. It's not a bad
    car but
I haven't tried the 9-3 and 9-5s as my interest in SAAB kind of
withered with my exposure to the GM900. Everybody seems to agree that
they are great cars so I figure that they got it right on the second
attempt. And more power to them for that.
They all did that, even in pre-GM times although the 'fast' was
optional and required you to order the turbo.
According to the noise, pretty much every 1.0 Nova around here...

GM900. 9-3 onwards is supposed to be a lot better.
The sensotronic has the reputation of being very good once removed from
    the car...

Pah. My Saab 96 two-stroke sounded truly awesome on the occasion I had
to drive it back home from Scotland with a blown exhaust system. Not
having a full complement of forward gears because the column change
linkage had come loose didn't help.

Always fancied a Sonnett. I see a new (260 BHP) one is planned.

I'd love to get my hands on a half-decent Sonnet III. The guy I used to
get my SAAB spares from in German had one squirrelled away in a barn
but I never had the cash to liberate it.

    Back in 1984 I had a 96[1] with a V4 2.0 litre Ford Corsair engine, it
    was awesome.

Might I mention the Forester has the same footprint, pretty much, as the
Octavia and is a damn' sight easier to park? Those who feel like it can
get them with Turbo and perhaps 2.5L.

The manual says the seats convert to a bed. The back seat is vast.

I've even seen one with lowered suspension....

The Forester is supposedly an Impreza floor and mechanicals with an SUV
body. Having driven an early model Forester Turbo I can attest to the
    grin factor available.

I bloody well hope not - had one of those on the Octavia, which was why
    I got rid of it.

We seem to have had fairly similar car histories. In the mid-late 80s I
    had the Europa, a 900 Turbo & a BMW 1602 fitted with a V6 3.0 litre
Ford Essex engine. I suspect that's where the similarities end though
as I also had a couple of Alfas (one of which was another transplant
    job).

Hmmm. That might be one to add back to the list to replace the V70XC
I've been driving since 1999. When we bought it we tested the Forester
but were distinctly underwhelmed by its performance (I've no idea what
engine size they were using then, but it didn't give anything like the
kick of the 193bhp Volvo) and build quality. It just didn't feel like
a luxury car in the same league as the Volvo.

I'm struggling to find alternatives without going to a full-blown SUV
which I really don't want. 4WD is essential, as is ample power and
true long-distance comfort, including enough space for four full-sized
adults and all their ski gear. So far there's only the Lexus LX400H
and (an outsider) the Porsche Cayenne that seem to fit the bill. The
later model Volvo XC70 has just gone too soft for my liking, although
this may also be true of the other makes, none of which I've driven
    yet.

Don't Subaru do something called the Outback now, or is that just a
    later version of the Forester?
Others that could might the bill (being *slightly* less SUV like)

Yeah, it's been around for years, but is basically too small for me.
I'm trying to replace a Volvo Estate, remember.
Yes, that's been considered too. I was under the impression that it
had been replaced by the Q7, which I don't like at all. Last time I
looked at the A6 it felt too small, though, particularly in the back.
And the rear seats were crippling.
Yukk. It's just an ugly underpowered version of the Cayenne, innit?
    Wiv a VW badge.
Oh, please. It's an MPV, FFS. And not even 4wd.

    But thanks.

Yeah yeah, but it's still an slow old oil-burner. Within the range the
only model with acceptable performance is the 5.0l V10 which is way
OTT. Even then, it's still 7.4 seconds 0-100kph, which while just a
little bit quicker than the current Volvo is hardly blistering.

So the Cayenne range has much more appeal, with even the non-turbo S
    model giving a 6.8sec time.
