  1. That'll be the crap suspension.

.....Is the correct answer. And i'll even 'look after' it for you :>)
Mind ewe, M5 + London doesn't compute at all. Nice idea though Timo.

In which case, "FOYSC" is surely the relevant riposte.

    How about a A3 Quattro 1.8T Sport?

    I've had two excellent French cars - a 205 GTI 1.9 and a 306 GTi6.

I would have either model again, despite also owning a pretty poor 205
GTI 1.9, although having now moved to owning a newish Audi it's
probably unlikely that I'd go back to a car that old, IYSWIM.

My brother had a Cooper for a year or so. He's 6'3" and I'm 6'2" and
we both drove it quite comfortably. The pedals are in funny places
though which makes it a bit harder to chuck around.

    It's proper chickwheels though.

If you've got a 10 grand budget and want a hot hatch I can highly
recommend the Fiesta ST I've got.

    http://www.ford.co.uk/ie/fiesta/-/fie_0508_body_st/-/-/3/217110

2 litre 150bhp makes it quick enough to be fun but still pretty frugal
to run (38mpg), handles beautifully when thrown around, comes with all
the toys and a decent supportive set half leather seats. I picked up
    a 6 month old, 4000 mile, 06 model late last year for 10.5k. It'll
still be under warranty until the first MOT.

Mind you, it's pretty much chickwheels as well.

They cost an utter fortune to run when town driving. And they
incredibly uncomfortable as well as being cheap and plasticy inside.

They deliberately didn't make it refined. It's supposed to be a track
car on the road and it shows.

I thought the 4WD might appeal.
    "They all do that, sir"

All the A3 Sport models are pretty hard on the suspension and the
sports seats aren't great. Mine is a 2.0 SE with the 16" wheels,
which, while not great in the handling stakes, is pretty forgiving on
crappy surfaces and lovely for M-way cruising.

Next, I'd like a Sportback with the 2.0T engine, but SE spec, not Sport
or S-Line. Secondhand ones are like hen's teeth. The vast majority of
A3s seem to be Sport spec and I can't work out why.

While I'm at it, what is it about adding the word "Sport" to the spec
of a car anyway? I mean you can get a Micra Sport now, FFS!

Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo? I think that's a serious suggestion, but I'm not
    entirely sure.

Pretty much. Think about standing on the loud pedal.

Indirects refers to the gearbox, in an endearingly monotrematic manner
(or should that be monotraumatic?) as when cars had four gears, 1, 2
and 3 were referred to as indirect gears (the drive being diverted
along the layshaft) whilst fourth was direct, one-to-one, you got out
of it the rpm you put into it. HTH.

Heh. Things move on though. Modern Italian & British bikes are better
built & more reliable than modern German bikes - the same could be true
for cars. Mercedes build quality has been panned in recent years, & the
Internet's full of horror stories about Audis.

I don't know the 'truth' about the Fiat Coupe, but my ex father in law
had one that was totally reliable, & they seem highly rated on
reviewcentre.com. I'm sure someone somewhere will have a Top Gear[1]
mag with the JD Power survey results.

[1] For those who may not have noticed, the new series starts Sunday.

Hmm. So not brilliant, but better than the Mini or Merc V-Class. That
list is nearly 6 years old though.
