Depends on the mileage etc but looks like there's a selection.

Perhaps, but who would want to drive an 'R' on a motorway if there was
an alternative twisty route? I always see them as the car equivalent of
a 'hooligan bike'. Not really intended to be refined.
Indeed. Just comparing the Honda 2.0 lump with the VAG one as you have a
similar point of reference with the Fabia.

The Golf with the turbo and supercharger (GT?) Might be a good choice
round town, I'm sure somebody on here got one as a co. car recently.

Torque-steering occurs on bikes? Well, that's a new one on me.
Er no. IME the (9-5) Saabs we drive on the adv course are fun until they're
really pushed. Then they become tiresome. They're fine in a dry, straight
line but in wet and slippery conditions the (diesel) Beemers outstrip them by
a loooong way. It's the reason Hendon still values the old 5 series so much.
The new ones wallow like hippos. Their new bikes, OTOH, rock.
O'Reilly? Some time ago, on a trip oop norf to see my ma (before she passed
on) in some shitty weather in a company Golf GTI, I noted the number of cars
stranded. The greater proportion of those was RWD. My old Golf handled
flawlessly. One Merc driver did a perfect pirouette in front of me on the
A404 but lost points on the recovery...

One is not always going to be a perfect driver.
AYB you will with any car. Opinions are like arseholes.
    Smart car? *smirk*

No, actually, I quite like 'em. They even pass the Elk Test now...
Ta. I'll dream instead of Leanne and her girl fur...

You've not tried the Golf Mk5 GTi then. It's the Mk1 revisited, but with
    shedloads more power and refinement.

They say you can't reasonably put more than about 150bhp through the front
    wheels. Champ's SAAB has 250bhp.

    They're right.

I've learned to ignore other people's opinions on things like bikes and
cars. There's no substitute for getting your own arse in the driving
seat and trying it for yourself. The MK5 GTi I tried was a fucking hoot.

No I don't. I'm not trained to ride bikes that are propelled and steered
    through the same wheel.
    Then we're agreed. Ish.
K fine. I'll be in Egypt, gawping at fish gawping at me. Clownfish are cool -
they have no idea you're there - they just see a reflected aggressor in your
mask lenses and keep trying to attack it...
    Nerp, you neither.
Natch. You'll always hear positives and negatives for every car.
Noted. I'll try to persuade Haringey to become a fully-paid up London
    borough.
AOL. Working here makes it even more enjoyable. Riding through Regents Park
or along the King's Road in summertime and avoiding crump-accs[1] is, quite
    simply, life-affirming.

You'd look comedic in a Mini, trust me.
    I'd get a pre-Vauxhall turbo, something like item 190075282633, and spend a
few bob on fixing the minor flaws. From the POV of your back, the seats in
the older cars were simply superb.

"They" was 10 or maybe 20 years ago, so whatever, but I did have the
opportunity of fooling about in Champ's Aero the other weekend. Even with
the traction control switched on, if you stand loud in the indirects, it
writhes about like a Ural outfit with Statto at the helm.

AOL. Actually Bear should be able to find a decent pre-VX one through
    the owner's club...

    I'd go for a 3-door 16V full-pressure turbo, preferably a Carlsson, in
very good nick and then get somebody like Abbot to sort out the
handling if it's not to Sir's liking...

Well, the target audience loves them, but they'd make it even more
noisy. It's a sign of old age mate ;).

Oddly enough the Integra Type R has exactly the same problem. One of
the blokes at Barcap had one and he loved it, but he wasn't too happy
    with the noise.
You've just discovered the joy of a Stealth Car.

The ones that take the biscuit in this case are Subaru Legacy
Twin-Turbos by the way - a bit more grown up, looks like a grandad's
    car.

Only that in this case, Grandad spars with Mike Tyson for fun.

Somebody forgot to tell the monkeys who are currently working on my
insurance premium by turning their RX-7s into landscaping features,
    though.
Erm, I think that was what a certain Mr Ferret was trying to tell you.
The E34s that both JB and myself rate quite highly aren't as big as the
later ones - and your budget would easily buy you a decent M5 with some
money left over for the additional cost of maintenance.

Well, there's always the spec /or/ performance - if you want the latter
there is definitely some choice available for less money.

That said, I never liked Audis - every one I drove felt like it had
done about twice the miles it had on the odometer and no, I don't think
    they were clocked.
