Bear says... My sister has one. It has been perfectly reliable in the 3 years and 1800 miles she's owned it, but having never been above 55mph I'd expect it to be.
You know I don't get on with FWD motors, but the Coopers are massive fun, but do watch out for some 'interesting' faults in used models. Some scary recalls too. http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/index.php?url=/carbycar/index.htm A mate in Sutton bought as a non-runner one from a neighbour who'd only done 6500 or so miles (over 3yrs mind) before the gearbox blew up! No joy from the BMW dealer on any recompense either. Get on the forum and ask away: www.mini2.com/forum/ I reckon they'd be a real hoot around town. JB
The B-i-L had one a couple of years back. He thought it was great, if a little cramped for his 6' 5" self. Doesn't explain why he changed it for an A3 2.0 TD though.....[1] Dave [1] That said, I prefer the Audi.[2] I thought the Cooper S was a bit sluggish for what it should have been (i.e. not sluggish, just crap for a smallish car with a supercharged petrol engine) [2] But he since changed that too[3] [3] For a more powerful, more toy-ed up A3
Bear says... My sister won't let me drive her Cooper S, poor girl still has horrifying flashbacks to the day I drove her down a twisty road in her old MGF VVC.
My psychotic-ex-gf had one. It was utter wank and a pig to drive. Technical terms, of course. It was straightforward to maintain, but, to be frank and not sit on the fence any longer, it was a bag'o'shite. I could get emotional over it but I can't be arsed. IMO, the previous model BMW 5 is the most responsive, amazing, surefooted car I've ever driven. And it beats my old Subaru Impreza hands down... Can we stop talking about c*ges now, pls?
How about a BMW 330D? Quick, economical (over 40mpg even when cruising at 90mph plus) and doesn't have excessively hard suspension. I have had mine for a couple of years and I really like it.

I've got a Cooper, rather than the Cooper S. Bought 14 months ago as a 3 month old ex demo with all the toys and 2.5K on the clock, now up to 18K. Used mostly by other half as a daily work vehicle so spends its time crawling through traffic in Clapham and Battersea [1]. So far, touch wood, the only problems have been with the run flat tyes not keeping pressure and the passenger window being broken by some chav with a rock and the seeming inability of Autoglass to fix it properly or make good any of their promises [2]. It drives really nicely, though with big wheels and sports suspension it is a bit prone to bump steer. Reasonably quick, comfy, fun. Depreciates less than similar "super minis". And the other half's firm pays us 40p a mile for every mile we do in it. I like it. [1] The average MPH readout on the computer was giving an average of 19mph [3] when we got it, now down to 4.5mph [4].. [2] Badly fitted on the first visit so the wind noise was immense and the door trim broken by the monkey that they sent out, two further visits and inumerable phone calls and it's still not fixed properly. [3] Not sure of the basis of this calculation - I assume it's not simply speed over distance but has a time component built in as well. [4] Erk. Could walk faster.

[nods] I don't get to spank the arse off FWD cars that much. Mine own (smaaaaaaalll aubergine) is FWD but I like my licence clean. FWD sucks for larger cars *except* in the ice. Global warming, blah... Mined ewe, RWD on *the* skidpan was easier. "They're as reliable as any well-maintained car." Caveat, caveat... Truuuust me, I used to sell second hand cars. Oh yes you do, you cnut. Do yourself a favour and ditch the frog for a kraut. Hairy armpits are back in, you know. Duly noted.

The vehicle may well be eminently nickable, but those driving it may also be perceived as eminently nickable... "It's not prejudice. It's just gut-feeling."
