    Hi

I am about to make my mind up on my first big bike.

I am middle aged, short with a bad back also!!!

I have narrowed it down to a Honda Hornet 600 or a Yamaha Fazer 600. I want
to buy a bike at 1-2 years old so I don't lose the showroom money and don't
    have the running in worries.

Suzuki keep trying to give away new sv650's but I am suspicious as to why
    they are SO cheap.

Any advice would be grateful. Or even alternatives I should be looking at

    Kind Regards

    Jamie

Take the sv650, they are plenty of fun, they'll do 130 which will be more
than enough for a first real bike, but they are easy to ride. I've had an sv
and the fazer, they are both great bikes, but the sv was just more.... fun.
I know youre probably sat there looking at all the specs sheets and seeing
the fazer has more power, but it doesnt show when riding, the sv's V twin is
quite capable of pulling your arms out of their sockets.

Oh, dont get the hornet unless you want to carry a spare tank of fuel on the
    back seat.

Suzuki might be discounting SV's if the dealer is approaching target
time. That's what happened with mine. My other bike was a Bandit, so I
can't really help with your comparisons, but the SV is a hoot to ride.
It is slightly tall though, so it depends just how short you are..

  5. They're both about the same on top speed. Fazer has a centre stand,
better fairing - assuming you are thinking of a faired Hornet - and a
much bigger fuel tank, giving a far better range.

Fazer is probably a better all-rounder. Hornet is a sort of
    short-journey hoon machine.

  7. fulliautomatix has a 1500 wing, they sometimes require a bit of muscling to
    behave
the SV650 is a nice bike
dont know about specials in your country but i almost bought one before
discovering the goldwing, would be much easier to ride but far less luggage
    capacity and 'sheer grunt'

there is never enough luggage capacity when touring two up

  8. short-journey hoon machine.

    what is short journey?

here short journey is about 125 miles, then return, and 400-600 miles are
covered in a day on a longer journey?

  10. Heh. Ain't dat de troof.

Why is that blokes seem able to get all their stuff into a tank bag, but
women need both panniers, plus whatever you have bungeed onto the rack?

Do tell us when you have done it won't you.

A liability on two wheels then.

They are shit. Suzuki still have a reputation for making their bikes
    out of pure metallic oxides.

Realistically? Stick to your pipe and slippers granddad. But if you
really must go out and pretend you have regained your lost youth just
keep out of the fucking way will you and let the proper riders pass.

  12. You won't be suprised to hear that when I used to tour with my wife,
she managed to get everything she needed in one Givi pannier easily,
while I struggled toget mine in the other plus tankbag.

Shoes is the problem. One pair of size 10s and a pannier is half
full. Her size 4s hardly took any space[/QUOTE]

Her T-shirts were similarly skimpy, IIRC. At least the one you bought in
    Bandol was.

And *probably* (depending slightly on your shape) will give you a more
upright riding position which might be good for your back.

A CB500 is a good cheaper all round option which might be worth thinking
about ..... 'though without the power of the Hornet, Fazer or even the less
    powerful than that pair SV650.

Yep. I'd rather have the Hornet too - So long as it was a 2000 model or
later [ie, you want the 17" not 16" front wheel for more controlability on a
sharp turn-in]. I'd trust the Hornet to last longer too.
