For me, it came from when I changed my ZXR-750. I tried the new ZX-7R,
the latest Blade and the ZX9R-C1. The Blade was easy to ride, competent
in all areas, and that was it. The 7R seemed to weigh a ton. The 9R was
like a missile and made one's eyes bleed.[1] The bike shop owner had said
to my mate that I'd either love it or hate it and when he saw my stupid
grin atfer the test ride, he knew the sale was in the bag.

Plus all the matlo weekend warriors had a blade, because it was the "thing
to have" for them and none could ride for shit. In them days it fair
tickled your heart to see someone thrash the pants off one, deck out the
hero blobs and have no handbag stripes.

[1] Of course technology has moved on a pace, and now it's a lardy old
    bus.

My SV scares me. Compared to the 7R, the handling's fucking treacherous.

what tyres do you have on it? I've never seen handling been mentioned
as an issue on SVs[1]. As you sure you're not confusing the heavy-but-
predictable steering on the 7R -v- the increased flickability of the
    lighter SV for "handling"?

[1] of course, normally people used to proper sports bikes wouldn't
    find themselves riding SVs.

Sportmaxes, I think. I've had two rides on it, and it's still not hit 2k
miles, so it'll still be on the original rubber. It's nowhere near as
stable as the 7R, in the sense that on several occasions last weekend it
was tying itself in knots where the 7R would have been solid as a rock.
Skittish might be the word. Not quite the hinged frame on the bandit,
    but similar in some ways.

I'm still getting used to having brakes that work. After a 32k mile b12
and a 25k mile 7R, both nudging 9 years old, a light bike with working
stoppers is not so much a revelation as an impetus to renew my life
insurance. Every time I brake hard, it's a 50:50 bit on the back-end
overtaking the front one way or another.
Well, yes, it's not exactly what you'd call an upgrade.

I wasn't meaning you Darsy, just every fucking nutter who writes for bike
rags. To a man they all trot out the same old shite and it usually starts
with "The Honda (chose a model) is bland and boring". I really can't see how
it's possible to be bored on a bike capable of easily broaching twice the
legal limit in **** all time. Maybe they feel that a rider has to shit
hisself after every corner coz the bike was a bastard to haul round it, I
don't know. What I *do* know is it's bollocks.

One of these twats said the Deuville was boring so he had a heart rate
monitor attached and then got on the back of Jamie Whitham's. His heart rate
went well over double and he admitted he was shitting bricks, but STILL
fucking said that the Deuville didn't excite him. I binned the rag and I've
    not bought it since.
Having watched GP's since I were a lad, I'm in complete agreement. I can
imagine Kevin Schwantz, Freddie Spencer or Bazza considering a 'blade
boring, but not your non racing street rider. Boring? My arse they are.

But isn't this more an indication of your abilities as a racer/rider than it
is about the bike itself? Also, how is it sanitised, easy to ride and
    'nice'?

Diablos are the mutt's nuts for the SV. The stock suspension cries
out for a new rear shock and something for the front as well, increased
preload and slightly thicker fork oil will help if you don't want to
spring for cartridge emulators or a wholesale fork replacement.
    Indeed.

I might wind up the preload a bit then, and look at tyres when they need
replacing. The plan is to only keep it for a year or so, until I have
some NCB again, and then get something a bit more interesting, so I'm
not going to throw money at it unless it's essential. So long as I keep
it tidy and don't rack up too many miles, it'll do fine.

    Does *anybody* make a non-shit hugger for a K3-onwards SV650? The only
ones I can find (other than Suzuki's own) is Powerbronze and it's a
wanky plastic monstrosity. Decent bits on ebay are like hens teeth.

IME they're a bit loose and bouncy feeling, but seem able to keep their
grip in just about every situation, using some kind of secret force.

    Honestly, they handle fine.
