  2. I tried to buy one last year, just as they were being discontinued and
heavily discounted, but they'd all gone.

They seem reasonably solid, but they are not that cheap to run - service
costs are (obviously) the same as for a 996.

SuperDuke. The new ones have a bigger tank and there's room to nail a
tailpack on. Rucksack for the lappie and you're having a ball instead of
    working.

Where the **** did you read that?

It might be 5'9" in Wooton where 90% of the population is related but
not in the rest of the country.

If you got on with an R1150GS no doubt you'd find the DL1000 no big
deal. First thing I'd do if it were mine though, would be to put a
Russell Day-Long saddle[2] on it, which would make it impossible to
flatfoot unless you've got long legs. I find any stock saddle to
be excruciating after about two hours.

Sadly it would appear to be correct.

That's something that's always bugged me. How has the 'blade - or any other
Honda for that matter - got the reputation for being
boring/bland/unexciting/takeyourpick? Is it because they may be a mile an
hour slower than a MotoGP bike, because they don't out accelerate a 5000bhp
dragster or is it that they simply don't rot to **** all in five minutes
and don't break down every 5 minutes?

sarcasm tags should have been used somewhere.

The 'blade is anything but boring, but it's considered a bit "safe"
compared to kwaks/sukukes, though only old 70s fuckers really know
what they're trying to say when they make these comparisons.

Well, i think it looks sort of cool (no whoosh)....

I got the measurements off the dealer & didnt re-check them, it's
fucking huge & 'just' fits in my hidey hole.

It's a cracking ride though, got everything I need. Should have bought
one from the start i think.

BMW R1150GS obviously. R1200GS seems to have had accountants added
to it, so the quality is much lower. The two I had never had any
issues. However, that depends if you can purchase a used bike with
    that money.

Rode my R1150GS from Barnet to Warwick and back for just over
a year, all year round, with zero problems except for that
last day in 2002... but then again the bike design saved my leg.

Whilst I see where you're coming from I think your riding experience
    is showing.

Stick my brother, who's had his licence for two years now and only
ever owned a B6, onto any of the big four's litre bikes and I think
    they'd all scare him.

I always felt that the gixxer would feel completely uninimidating to a
    newbie. as it happens.

    Getting off a Bandit 1200 and onto Mat Tab's mate's early-model (I
think it was a '95) 'blade with <2 years experience didn't scare me in
    the least.

Getting off a TRX850 and onto your old Gixer a couple of years later
didn't scare me in the least either.

Maybe I'm just not sensitive to risk.
