I've tried Limewire, not impressed and not enough variety amongst users.
I did have Bearshare, but that took over my old system and I won't use
it again. Napster has gone to a pay site. What's left that I can
download the odd track to save to my pc?

    Previously on usenet, Alan said...
I tried that too, liked it. But I thought it had also gone the pay
    route?

On Ginge's recommendation I've started using Shareaza.

    http://www.shareaza.com/

    Accesses Gnutella(1 & 2), e-Donkey and BitTorrent networks. Only
drawback I've found is you really need to leave it running to
establish decent neighbour connections before doing any searches in
order to maximise the search results.

    I use eMule.
The problem with emule is that it can take ages to download what you want
and during that time, you'll find yourself uploading quite a bit...

Shareaza connects to _all 3_ of the filesharing networks, giving you the
most chance of finding what you need.

Limewire and Bearshare only connect to 1 of these networks (actually the
    same one).

I've got an older version of kazaalite that still seems to work OK, but i'd
have to send it to you as you can't down load it anymore

You're thinking of Kazaa. You can get Kazaa lite (i.e. no spyware) at
    here.

    http://rrtn.mirror.at/

Kazaa Resurrection ain't too bad either.

I believe that the original Kazza lite site is down for legal
    reasons...

Have you looked at your ISP's newsgroups [1] i.e
    alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd, alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.(type of music)
etc. I have not used kazaa, limewire or any other of these for a long time
because you are resricted to the upload speed of the person you are
downloading from. Whereas with newsgroup downloads you are restricted by
your max. download speed be it 256K, 512K, 1 Meg or 2 Meg as the ISP will
send it to you at your max. download.

With 1 meg, it takes 10 mins at least to load alt.binaries.cd_complete as
there are normally a lot of headers (161,946 at the moment).

Also have a look at www.newzbin.com (safe) as this will show you which
    newsgroups to look for.

    Just my 2 pence worth.

[1] Some ISPs are better than others, Telewest have a good selection whereas
NTL dont have as much. ADSL, no idea

Oh and P.S If you read Sir.Tony's posts and imagine it being spoken by
Inspector Clouseau's butler Kato it seems quite fitting.

You obviously know something I don't. From the eMule FAQ; "A lower upload
means fewer credits and a longer wait time in queues".
I wasn't aware it was possible to turn off the sharing. Unless you mean
turning off the shared directories, but even if you turn all those off,
you will still be able to see your part downloaded files when you click on
    the "shared files" icon.

It was these I was talking about, other users will be able to download the
bits already there and while you're downloading a whopping huge file, you
will be uploading loads of it to somebody else.

Selfishness goes unrewarded. Yes I read that.

Selfishness goes unrewarded. It is a file "sharing" programme or did I
    miss something fundamental?

and you in turn will be a part of a group who are sharing a current
download among yourselves. It is part of a philosophy to pass the
network load of sharing around those who are doing it. I think the idea
    is called The Horde

For which you will be duly rewarded.

Or you can remain a selfish ****.

You are obviously reading something there which isn't there.
I'm not complaining about uploading stuff, I'm just saying it's something
    that has to be done.

    Now **** off, there's a good chap.

This might not be the place but. DO NOT USE ZAZAA.
I have been plagued for the last few weeks by the w.32swen virus which is
endemic to kazaa. Also the kwbot32c virus. Pain in the arse 'cause its a mail
base which ties up my (56k) system. Any help gratefully received.
