Which 2 Bikes

  1. Okay, latest in the interminable saga where I dither endlessly over
    what bike to have next is the thought of having 2 bikes instead of 1.

    1 bike would be the biggest, fastest, bike I can insure. Something to
    take out for a good thrash when the mood suits and not too expensive so
    I can take it on tracks without worrying too much about losing it.
    Thinking something like an old 'blade or R1.

    The other bike would be a pipe and slippers bike. Something I can tour
    round Wales/France with, takes me to work but isn't left too far behind
    when it comes to the fun stuff. Thinking Fazer6 or SV650.

    Total spendage: £5k.

    Thoughts?

    If you're after a FOAD sports bike, then something like a Fazer, or any
    smaller four, is just going to feel weedy by comparison. An SV650 might
    fit the bill better, but ideally you want two bikes that are totally
    different. That way, hopping from one to t'other is always a change
    rather than more (or less) of the same.

    £3k gets you a damn nice Blade, and at that sort of price level I'd
    rather have the security of Honda's reliability (and finish) than a
    possibly ropey Yamaha. ZX9R would be another sane choice.

    For the other.... well, any number of SOBs, obviously. But something
    chalk-and-cheese would be nice. A big single dirt bike, like a 660
    Tenere? You ought to be able to find a decent Transalp. Maybe even a
    decent late-ish airhead BMW boxer - in fact, an R80GS would be a hoot.

    And it just so happens, I have a fine example of a ZX9R, C2 for sale to a
    lucky person and for just the sum described above... Top notch, all singing
    and dancing Ohlins shock and gorgeous road legal Quill end can on.

    It is a very nice clean bike.

    Q to Bonners if he's reading. Just how huge, on the road, is the gulf
    between your old 9R and the current ZX-10?

    supertanker of a Triumph, for one thing.

    I'd go for a ZXR400 for sport & fun, and a ZX9-R for touring as I could
    take the saddle to bed with me when I got there :)

    Sadly I'm starting to yearn for a sports bike again. I don't know if i
    should indulge myself, I fear it will end in pain.

    Anyway with the share-price situation it seems like my annual options
    won't be buying me a new bike this time around.

    month.

    It was an unlooked-for and unexpected personal "thanks" from my CEO for
    some work I did last year. Very nice too.

    My wrists don't like it on long journeys, to the extent that I'm unable to
    pull the clutch in after about 50 miles - wrists are slightly fucked
    unfortunately. Suspect it's the angle of dangle with the 9R, the R6 putting
    the load on in a slightly more direct line.
