Where to start?

    Hi everyone,

I'm itching to get into all of this biking fun, mainly the offroad fun of
motocross. Before I splash out on anything, I'm interested in the mechanics
of the various engines etc., what makes a bike go, how one type of bike is
    different from another etc.

Does anyone know where the best place to start is? Are there any recommended
books which can get me started? The last thing I want to do is get a bike
and not know how it works, the same mistake I made when I bought my first
    car...

    Thanks
    Sam

I may have got you wrong, but it sounds to me like you're procrastinating.
Get out there and do it man. You know you need to do a CBT[1] so book one
up[2] and start enjoying bikes rather than just fantasising.

    [1] See Sam's previous post http://tinyurl.com/2pkdx [google]
[2] At most CBT places you can hire a bike too for about a tenner.

First, I suggest Sir reads the ukrm cbt and the ffaq.

Then Sir could do worse than familiarise himself with the publication
entitled: Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

If Sir truly wishes to learn then I can do little more than reluctantly
recommend that Sir requires a nice little CG125 Sir does.

  4. But not much worse. :)

That looks like Sam Nospam has an amusing anecdote to tell.

First, understand the basics. Haynes Owners Workshop Manual - Honda CG125.

And for under £500, You Want A Nice Little CG125. The most reliable bike.
The easiest bike to understand. The easiest bike to maintain, pull to bits
and put together again. The bike that runs for a couple of weeks with no
oil. The bike that is the king of the Hindu Kush. The best learner,
commuter, winter hack. In short - The Only Bike.

Above book, plus 1 Nice Little CG125 (Makes Sign of Holy Pushrods), 6
months, and the world will be your oyster!

In the annals of over rated books that's up there with Tolkein and
    Salinger.

Pah, don't you go dissing the Great HBoL. In years to come scholars of 20th
century history will class it amongst the great works of fiction along with
such literary masterpieces as the Daily Mail and the Labour Party Manifesto

I'm off ill today, and I'm reading the first one. It's easy reading and
good for when your apathy level is high.

Saying that, it took me most of the book to get into Catch 22, and then
it was over. Any recommendations? My "to read" pile is almost gone.

Based on a recommendation by darsy some time ago I got The Clay Machine Gun
by Victor Pelevin, which IMO is an interesting read, though definitively not
in the same league as J.K. Rowling.

  19. I finally finished Lord of the Rings yesterday. At about the 6th
    attempt.

Is it just me, or is it crap, really?

    It's just you.

Well, there may be one or two others, but nobody who matters.
