Where to ride from melbourne

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by news.internode.on.net, May 20, 2005.

  1. Looking at heading out tomorrow for a bit of twisty road action.

Does anyone have any suggestions of where to go with the least amount of
leaf crap on the road/ Good quality road.

Is the Reefton Spur still good this time of year?

Not a chance. This is Melbourne. We have these ... trees and stuff.
Excellent. Just got back. Nice up to Cumberland Junction, from
there to the Lake Mountain turnoff the road was damp and slippery
and lots of bark. Pretty dang cold for that bit too. Take it easy.

Police making their presence felt around Kinglake, BTW.

I remember ... been through there a few times. The original
poster seemed to be worried about leaves, though, so I thought
    I'd better mention it ...

Arthur's Seat is ok if you don't mind a 2 hour round trip for about 2
whole k's of nice windy bits... Although you can go up and down those
windy bits all day if you like. I did it Sunday, went up and down for
45 minutes, giggling as I passed the same 4 or 5 bikers each time as
    they did the same thing.

    Nice views though.

You really got to get a map of Victoria with roads other than the freeways
    drawn on it.

Agreed, that Melbourne Uni site is not bad at all, I've used it a few
times to find good roads around the place.

You could also pick up a copy of the Hema Motorcycle Atlas of
Australia, that's pretty good although the maps are very small. Pete
Thoeming, the main bloke behind Australian roadrider magazine, has
marked out his 50 favourite rides around Australia, a good few of which
are within reach of a Melbourne weekend trip.

I have to say though, the best way to find great roads is to ride with
grizzled old bikers who have been everywhere before and know a dozen
    stories about every town.
