Long time lurker, first time poster.

I was browsing some online gear retailers in the US, it seems that leather
jackets in the US are signficantly cheaper than jackets in Australia. A lot
of these places don't ship to Australia though. Just wondering if anyone out
there has ordered gear online from the US before and where from?

    Thanks in advance

Not really answering the question but this time last year I was in the
Dainese shop in Paris and almost cried when I saw how much cheaper their
leathergoods were than AU, even after the Euro conversion.

There's a list of shops that stock Joe Rocket gear. I'm sure at least
one of them would ship to AU. (unless it's some exporting animal goods
    customs thing)

Otherwise find someone with a US postal address and get them to forward
    the package on to you.

  3. Wonder if safety equipment there is also subject to a sales tax... there's
something (else) our resident power-tripper hasn't said boo about...

Most US suppliers will ship Fed Ex if requested, just ask 'em to ship it Fedex
to Oz - they usually don't offer it because they never get asked (and they don't
get asked because....you got it, they don't offer it :) It'll cost more to
Fedex it rather than a slow boat via 47 continents but its insured en transit
    and you'll have no dramas.

Is there a customs issue with regards to importing leather goods into
    Oz?

    Quarantine, etc.?

A cheaper and just as quick option is to ship via US Postal Service Air
    mail.

A word of warning. Clothing is subjected to 50% import duty. Often, if
you ship via UPS or FedEx, they'll be more inclined to inspect the goods
on arrival in Oz. For some reason, USPS stuff doesn't get as much
    attention.

The missus ordered some stuff from JC Penney recently. I had to fork
over $75 duty on clothing worth about $150 or there abouts when I went
to the Post Office to pick it up. It was shipped FedEx. First time this
has happened, as most other stuff we order comes via USPS.

Or if you can talk to them very nicely, they can wack an invoice in saying
"no commercial value" in which you get it tax free! That's what all the
electronic companies do when shipping goods around the world for repairs
and things like that, or even when new ones come in that are for warranty
purposes. Either that, or just put a reduced cost invoice, ie less than
$150 and you'll get it tax free into the country. Bring on the free trade
agreeements with the US I say! The Ozzie moto market will shit themselves
and be forced to sell at the correct prices!

  9. Umm, Cam, free trade agreements and import duties are two very separate
    things...

I doubt it. Aussie distributors will demand they be given exclusive rights to
sell to the Australian market and threaten to stop marketing and distribution
of products which are available cheaper via alternate sources such as online
    sellers in other countries.

    Biggest problem is sizing.
I know of a pair of Joe Rocket leathers going cheap because they are the
wrong size and cannot be sent back.

And the quality is no better than AGV Sport that you can get here for less
    than $1,000.

Depends what brand u intend on buying I guess, I'm thinking of getting an
alpinestars jacket, I can try it on here in aus, get the size, and buy
    online. no problems. (hopefully)
