Where did all that oil come from?

So today I taxed the Zephyr 550
I decided that now it is legal, I'd give it a run!
didn't even get 1 mile when it started to lose oil at an alarming rate.
Pushed it home and cleaned up the area losing oil (seems to be coming from
where the gear change mechanism goes.
    any ideas?
Is there a seal in there that could have perished?
I am a bit pissed off to say the least especially after just sucessfully
winning a full motad 4-1 exhaust for it for £25

  2. There is probably an oil seal housed in the casing where the shaft enters. I
guess it would have to be pretty badly damaged/perished to leak a lot of
oil though. I managed to replace one on a GS550 without stripping anything
down by just removing the lever, taping over the splines, lubing it well and
slipping a new seal carefully over it. hth.

Is there a blocked/coked up breather somewhere?
