Most western news is tailored to sell advertising time/space.

Even one of our local channels has the slogan "The news you want to
see" whereas I'd rather just see the news that is.

    Thank Gore for the internet.

Sure, but are you aware of the active editorialising over content - it's
not just what sells ads (which I can cope with) it's when senior manager
s and the proprietor cast aside any attempt at being unbiased or
providing a balanced view point and selectively and deliberately report
only one side of the news. You put in your links below stuff criticising
Moore for being one sided yet Murdoch has been systematically doing so
on Fox for over a decade:

"On 23 October 2003 Charles Reina, a former [fox] employee, blew the
whistle on just how shamelessly Murdoch's number one American propaganda
outlet, Fox news - the [self proclaimed] "fair and balanced network" -
corrodes the democratic pact between government and governed:

The roots of fox news' day to day on air basis are actual and direct.
They come in the form of an executive memo distributed electronically
each morning, addressing what stories will be covered and often,
suggesting how they should be covered. To the newsroom personnel
responsible for the channel's daytime programming "the memo" is the
bible. If on any given day you notice the fox anchors seem to be trying
to drive a particular point home, you can bet "the memo" is behind
it......and, intentionally or not, has ensured that the administration's
point of view consistently comes across on Fox news.....for instance
from the march 20 [2002] memo "there is something utterly
incomprehensible about kofi annan's remarks in which he allows that his
thoughts are with the iraqi people. One could ask where these thoughts
were during the 23 years saddam was brutalising those same iraqis" (1)

And if you think Reina is just one disgruntled former employee, how
about our very own Max "the Axe" Moore Wilton, Johnny's right hand man
    until very recently:

"In terms of what the Fox network has done during the whole security
debate issue, the way in which the australian has refocussed itself in
the last 12 month, the impact is enormous...I think Murdoch's power goes
well beyond covert....The biggest change has been the way Rupert has
harnessed his TV networks on issues in the last 12 months. He has
    harnessed them very brutally"(2)

There's a big difference between say reporting only your local issues
because as an American you don't care about anything outside your own
country, and deliberately slanting what is reported to serve a political
purpose. Just about everything owned by Murdoch suffers from it to some
extent. Packer isn't as blatant but there's a bit of it happening.

Democracy needs a free press, Australia has the highest media ownership
concentration in the world and it removes the ability of dissenting
voices being heard, it allows our prime minister to ignore the people
(as both Howard AND Keating were/are happy to do).

It's not a Liberal thing, Labor is also guilty, but it's up to us to not
    stand for it.

Thanks Doug, it is interesting to see that in some respects, Iraqis are
as divided as we are here. I was particularly taken by this: "Well; one
may argue that the Philippinos realised their size at last! They
discovered that the Ants are unable to join the Elephants for a walk! On
the same time they learn that the Bats are incapable to face the day
light and the heavy weight may only be carried out by the Camels not the
Rabbits!" Almost on-topic here in aus.moto...

This is good too: "yesterday, the ban on Muqtada’s radical paper got
removed. Is this how we are going to build democracy?!" Well that's sort
of how it works in the established democracies... "free press" means that
you can be free if you have a press.

But since you don't have a quote from John Winston Stalin, that's a blue-
    ribbon "whoosh" :)

I wasn't familar with Fox until others in others threw the accusation
that I was a compulsive Fox watcher at me... Seems it's the west's
    answer to Al Jazeera... http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage
Maybe we should ask Richard Branson if he can break the two party system
with a low cost political party. The VirginPollie Party perhaps...

I think you'll find that Al Jazeera are actually trying very hard to
present both sides of the story - which is exactly why the US hates them
so much - they keep presenting the views of people they would prefer to
be muzzled, as well as the views of the whitehouse (some of the
incumbents of which should be muzzled).

Go watch the movie "control room" and tell me if you still think they're
a propaganda outfit, or just simply an Arabic news channel trying to
    present both sides.

    When I was young...a long time ago....I had a t-shirt with "virgin

The only virgin I had converted at the time was me.

Yairs, I think I've got a similar problem at the moment - top speed is
down to 120kph (downhill) and it has similar acceleration to my truck!
    :-(

The RII model is definitely the go-faster version, it even has an
alloy brake pedal and gear shifter (which presumably saves massive
amounts of weight over the plain old R model's steel fittings!)
