    X-No-archive: yes
Thanks but I thought the glad wrap was much cleverer!
(I had to write something though 'cause it seemed like "glad wrap" was
    gonna' just whoosh!)

I'll have to get my '87 CBR1000F running again soon[1], so I can go
and park it next to a CBR1000RR. ;-)

    halfway there!

  4. You could park a 1989 GPX250 next to a 2004 GPX250,to see how much they've
    evolved...

I have CBR1000F and regualry hoon with a guy with a new CBR1000, just

? huh ? Soft front makes it easier to get it up on the throttle. wind up
to about 2/3rds of max rpm (or around the peak torque point) chop the
throttle off and back open and the weight sinking down and then pushing
back into the forks makes it heaps easier

Well, that's my experience YMMV, interested to hear if anyone has
    experimented with it
Now that's definitely dodgy - the low tyre pressure is gunna make the
tyre walls all floppy and sloppy and it's gunna be less stable
    Yeah OK, I'll buy that.
Yeah, particularly if you're fat or its underpowered or both

I agree but preload doesn't really make forks any less "soft".... Just
reaises the ride height (which kinda' puts you in a more wheelie-ish
    position).
I think 2/3rds max is too high to start with. (But I err on the side of
caution....) I think 1/3rd for starters and then increase it a little each
    try until it works.
(Also, I earlier said "close the throttle..." but it's really just a flick
off-power followed by a flick back on)
    ~
Beyond by skills to discern but I'd pick "hard" rather than "soft".

    Damping is adjustable now?!!?

More tips to make things easier:

    N. Make sure your suspension is well set up not just for take-off
but for landing too! There's nothing more embarrasing than
following a long, floating wheel-stand with a frantic tankslapper

N+1. Other, possibly, than being booked for doing it outside your
    daughter's school.

I rode a mate's Diversion yesterday and, naturally, I gave it a shot.....
It came up beautifully to a nice floaty balance-point but then my big
stupid foot knocked it into neutral!
We crashed back to earth rather awkwardly......

Alright, you are indeed correct in that by preloading it you shorten the
travel before a variable rate spring gets into it's primary working
zone. Which feels softer to me - maybe that's a bad wording then.

Point is you *want* the travel, the weight shift back and forth is what
makes it easier on underpowered bikes.

You really wouldn't bother on something like an R1, there you set it up
correctly for general riding and just open the taps any time you want to
    lift the front.
OK Clem, just for you :)

Adding slabs of beer on the pillion seat, as required, is easier....
and, you can later drink the beer. :)

'88 is definately the year to own. (Especially the RII model, with the twin
discs! - Even if it is only operating 7 valves at the moment)

  20. I rode a mate's Diversion yesterday and, naturally, I gave it a shot.....
So I should make sure my very clumsy left foot is held well and truly away
from the gear lever until I get the hang of it all then.

BTW, I just dropped the bike off to get rejetted (so I rode to work today,
just won't be riding home). I am gradually getting there, I think. Am able
to do more little bunny hops now. Have a whole weekend of practicing open to
    me though. <grin>
