Race can. With 'motards it's still the simplest way to gain power. Practise, practise, practise. -- Veggie Dave UKRMHRC#2 BOTAFOF#08 IQ 18 FILMS http://www.iq18films.com IQ 18 RADIO http://www.iq18films.co.uk Toxic Shock Syndrome Gets More Girls Than Me

snip> Don't you think that clutching the bike up in 3rd at about 110mph is already interesting? Your idea is also flawed in that you're forgetting that the bike has a close ratio gear box and you'd still end up with a very tall 1st gear then 5 more gears close together. The 10R is revving harder at 100 mph in top than the 9R was.
Have you progressed at all since we last spoke? Not much. Still working on it but I think its down to me not having the balls to open the throttle as much as I need to. Probably spend some time this weekend trying to improve on this.

In uk.rec.motorcycles, Veggie Dave belched forth and ejected the following: OK. I want to buy a K&N type filter as well. I'm guessing a Yamaha dealer can re-map my bike? Apart from anything else it's a bit jerky at constant town speeds, like 25mph-35mph when you're nice quite on and not quite off the throttle. It isn't a problem when it's WFO though. It would be nice to see it ridden through the gears on one wheel just to see if it can be done. It's only got 48bhp as standard.
They won't (or at least I seriously doubt) be able to re-map your bike without a Power Commander. Your bike probably isn't designed to be able to be mapped at a dealer (1) so unless you plug in something that gives them access you're fucked. I fitted a K&N to my bike and it gave it an instant 3bhp according to the dyno but taken as a percentage of power already there that was about a 1% gain at the back wheel. My bike was running slightly lean and the K&N was good because it sorted that out. If I were you I'd go to someone with a dyno and get them to run your bike and concentrate on the mixture rather than peak power. If it's out because of fitting the new cans then try a different filter. If it's ok then I'd leave it well alone. 48bhp at the crank. It'll be down on that even with the new cans when measured at the back wheel. My bike was putting out 151 at the wheel which may sound low for a 10R but apparently was perfectly normal *for the dyno it was tested on*. Some dyno figures are 'corrected' to allow for ram air, air density, bullshit factor and what ever else they want to put in there. If you're going to go down the route of tuning the bike then always go to the same place for dyno runs, at least you'll have a comparative figure to work from so you'll know the gains/losses are genuine. (1) Triumph dealers can map their bikes because Triumph sell different cans for them so they have to be able to set them up. Do Yamaha sell performance bits for your bike? The same goes for Ducati dealers who sell Termigs with the chip to suit. The problem lies in the fact that you have to cut the seal off the ECU to fit the chip and Ducati don't like you doing that.
More importantly they're designed with the facility already in mind, so it's a software mapping which isn't hard-coded as it seems to be on most other bikes, which is of course why they need the PC or equivalent. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Andy Bonwick belched forth and ejected the following: I'll give the main dealer a ring in the morning and see if it can be done. 3bhp on mine is probably about 8% so not bad and I thought a K&N would make it run leaner? I'd expect it to be out anyway but as it's fuel injected how would they sort the fuelling without remapping it? I thought that's what a PC did.. <Snip> There's got to be loads round here, I just haven't looked. A properly set up bike that's been done on a dyno should last forever, right? Or is it something that needs doing every so often? I'd have though FI wouldn't need doing. Well quite and mine's still under warranty. I want to be able to put it back to standard fairly quickly and without much/any evidence if it needs taking in for work.
Well, that's certainly true. He'll never get it to the point where it's on par with a standard KTM, 'Berg etc. -- Veggie Dave UKRMHRC#2 BOTAFOF#08 IQ 18 FILMS http://www.iq18films.com IQ 18 RADIO http://www.iq18films.co.uk Toxic Shock Syndrome Gets More Girls Than Me
It would, unless it was drastically over oiled, or the bike has a mass air sensor (which it doesn't). Indeed. Dealers can load different maps into some ECUs (e.g. Triumph), & you can get pre-programmed chips setup for different cans/filters for some bikes (e.g. MV). But for anything else the only simple option is a PC or equivalent. If you've just changed the pipes for sound, then you might not need to worry about it (unless it's running lean enough to cause damage). However if you've changed them for performance, you're missing out on the real gains by not getting a PC. Not forever as things wear out, affecting the mixture as they go. But that's likely to take longer than you own the bike for. The thing that can screw things up is when the dealer adjusts the CO at a service, but the PC will still be doing a fairly good job after that - just not necessarily perfect. -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250

Andy Bonwick says... YSL, which is where WC bought his bike, have a Yoshimura black box of tricks which can give access to allow remapping of his injection system. They offered to remap my Gixer if I was to fit a race can.
