Wheel straightening

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Grimley_Feindish, Feb 11, 2006.

  1. I bought a pair of BBS alloys for my KTM off of ebay and they looked fine
until I fitted the front this morning to check all was OK - the front has a
4 or 5mm run out and the disc appears to be slightly bent.

I've contacted the seller and he wants me to return the wheel so he can see
if it's bent and if it is then he'll refund what I'm asking for. I'm loathed
to do this though as all he has to say is that it's not bent and then I'm
minus a wheel and the money.

I can't see any cracks or obvious damage apart from a scuff on the top edge
of the rim right next to the tire wall. Is it probable that this wheel could
be straightened and if so does anyone know anywhere in East Anglia that will
do this? My thinking is that if I can get it straightened I can then present
him with the bill which would also be proof that it was bent and I wasn't
trying to rip him off. Obviously there's the possibility that he will not
agree to pay it but as it'll be less than the refund I want I'm hoping he
will. Otherwise I guess I've got a fight on my hands (not literally
hopefully although I do have his address :) )

Oops, one of the perils of buying without first seeing.
Hagon in Hainault, Essex do wheel straightening, but they are not cheap
from what I hear. I had my first ZZR1100's discs straightened by them
after Universal Tyres in Dunstable bent them in the tyre changing
machine, and I was very happy with the results.

  3. Indeed it is, had to happen to me one day. In fairness though, even if I had
seen them first I wouldn't have noticed the run out as they were off the
bike. The scuff looks fairly superficial, I've seen far worse kerb damage
done to alloys. this is where laziness gets you - I only wanted them so I
could have a set of Summer and Winter wheels/tires without having to keep
    getting them changed :)

I'll contact them for a quote, thanks. I've found these people as well
    http://www.alloywheelrepairs.net which look promising.

Draganfly (not Dragonfly) in Bungay seem to know what they're doing.

Porn, pure unadulterated porn. It's even worse if you go to the shop
and stop to look at the bikes they have on display.

They made a good prototype shock for my FZR... well, that's what it says
    on the bill. :)

I forget exactly how much, but that's about what it cost. Not bad for a
shocker with damping and preload adjust. :)

Hagon charge the same for whatever shock they build as a prototype. They
offered me the same deal when I had the XR400R cos I needed a shorter
one, so did others. I didn't have the bike long enough to get round to
    having them do it.

Lozzo scribbled on the back of a napkin:
No cheap they certainly aren't but as you said, they know what they're
doing. They rebuilt a Morini Kanguro front wheel for me that was left
egg shaped after some scrotes tried to nick the bike.

However from my experience, I'd pay for the "same day" service as their
attitude towards delivery times was a tad, er, flexible. At least back
    then.

That's a good deal, and no mistake. A £100 shock for the Bandit would be
excellent, but they've already got an off the shelf one for that... and
    it's not £100.
