I think it's true that with some, trial and error is the only way to
    progress beyond a certain point.

I gave him the prize Sudoku[0] from Saturday's Independent, which uses a
4x4 grid, so he could have a look at adapting the Excel spreadsheet that
he wrote for calculating possible solutions to the standard 3x3 grid
    puzzles.

[0] Spelt it properly this time.

    Oh. **** that, then.
It was the 4x4 one I tried. I find it a bit more interesting than a
crossword (which I hate) but not much.

    Well, quite.
I like doing crosswords, when I have the time, but I can't see what the
addiction is with Sudokus; once you've got the principle of how to solve
them, it's just a pointless, repetitive exercise.

  4. Take the wheel off and stick your ginger in the hole to rotate the
inners in turn. Any roughness is a buggered bearing.
    The usual suspects... BSL, etc.
You'd be surprised sometimes. However, if you get a set from a bearing
supplier, try to get Koyo - much better tolerances in the balls and
track than SKF and all the rest.

If the inner bearing is putting up a fight and/or you can't get any
purchase on the inner race try the following
    a) remove dust seal, carefully drill through the ball cage with small
drill and pull out with pliers
    b) knock ball bearings round to one point on the race
    c) remove inner race and ball bearings
    d)remove spacer
    e) knock out the other bearing from behind
    f) stand wheel vertically and replace ball bearings and inner race
into remaining outer race - use a small screwdriver to re-position
ball bearings, don't bother with cage
    g) knock out re-asssembled bearing from behind

If after giving a bearing a decent smack it appears to be welded in
place try heating it with a blow torch.

  6. Good tips.
BUT after disassembling the stubborn bearing you can use your slide
hammer with expanding mandrell pull out the outer race.
Then hope you can get another job to use the very expensive tool
    bought especially for that job.

Millions love playing tetris. I had a go at sudoku puzzles for a week
or so, but they've fallen foul of a PS2 and work. I was still finding
new ways on how to find the solution faster when I stopped.

Although I'd read a basic guide on how to go about them there was still
interest for me in developing a technique. I imagine I will get bored
with them once I've found the best way for me. "Battling against the
    clock" is of limited appeal.

    Re: Sudoku

If you have to guess in the tabloid puzzles it's because you missed
something. In a Telegraph 'diabolical' Sudoku you reach a point where
you have to guess then continue until you either get a contradiction and
reverse the guess or reach the point where you have to guess again.
Those are the only interesting puzzles.

Hmmm... interesting, but: there's not much description of the bearings
(e.g. make, etc.); and only 4 bearings per set? Isn't there a bearing in
    the sprocket carrier too?

(FWIW, the only time I've had a bearing completely fail was in a
sprocket carrier, so I think that something described as a "complete
set" should include a bearing for that too.)

Mind, the shop that that auction links to does seem very reasonable for
buying the bearings individually, and they're Koyo bearings, so should
    be OK.

I'll have to whip it out first[0] and check them, anyway.

What do you take me for, some kind of inconsiderate borrower of tools? I
    wouldn't do that to a friend's 1/2" ratchet.

No, I've got a length of scaffold pole, with which I shall twat his
sockets, so neither my hammer nor his ratchet handle are damaged.

  12. I went to the dealer for some wheel bearings for my SOB. he said "We don't
stock 'em try Bearing services heres the number of the bearings you need"
Which I thought was decent of him.

  16. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Beav
Pliers? Hasn't he got a vernier caliper then? Ideal for that.

The scaffold pole in question has previously been applied to his bike,
thus its attractive effect has already been somewhat neutralised.

I suspect he hasn't got one.

I'll just get him to hold it with his fingers - that's probably best.
