Wheel bearings...

  1. ....don't half give similar symptoms to a slowly deflating tyre as they
    disintegrate, don't they!

Until, that is, the clunking noises start.

I really, really thought that the new regulator for the V11 would be the
last fix for a long while. I mean, what else could possibly go wrong?

Thanks to the couple who stopped in the rain to offer assistance.
Especially as I discovered that I'd left my mobile in my other jacket....

The V11 is cursed. But you probably know this already....

  3. Heh. Maybe it's me...

Anyway, I'll persevere for a while longer. Not beaten; at least, not yet.

So far I've managed almost exactly 6K miles on it, though, despite the
fact that HPI said 'no anomalies' WRT the mileage, I don't believe that
    it's only covered 20K miles.

  4. Or a total blow-out, in my one and only experience of complete rear
    wheel bearing failure.

Bang in the middle of the Dartford Bridge, it was. Oh what fun.

  5. Not always. I was sitting on the m'way at a steady 80/90 and it was only
when I came off the slip road the rear bearings let it be known they
were utterly, utterly shagged. I suppose the steady high rate of turning
kept them in line (apart from fucking them in the first place).

From your & TOG's comments, maybe I was lucky, or perhaps I've got a
sensitive arse (ooh-err mister!) but the bike just started feeling...
wrong, somehow. Then there would be the odd twitch and I could feel
the bike had become very sensitive to the slightest bump. This got
progressively worse and I backed off to 60: By the time I'd got to the
Milton junction north of Cambridge, it felt as though leaning far from
bolt upright would be a Very Bad Idea.

Having looked at it this morning, both rear wheel bearings have
broken; the cages have bulged out (on one side the cage outer has
fallen off entirely) and they've both lost a couple of balls. Still a
reasonable amount of grease in there, though. I guess one failed and
took the other out with it.

As the inner & outer races have completey separated, I can't just
    drift them out with a bit of half inch mild steel as I normally would;
I suspect I'm going to have to molish a puller, or weld washers into
    the outer races.

  7. That's exactly how mine felt, to begin with. I did actually stop to
check the tyre was OK. And then the bearings collapsed entirely....

The CB200 had one, one ball disintegrated but at first there seemed to be no
symptoms, then the broken ball decided to become a sprag clutch.

The ball race locked solid and effectively scrapped the hub.

I once had some go west on a borrowed divvy, i shat my pants. Never had
anything go pop quite like it.

The time I had one go I managed to spot it before complete disaster.
I'd taken my bike to the local shop to have a new tyre fitted and the 16y.o.
lad who took the wheel out and refitted it left out the stepped spacer
that takes the pressure between the sprocket carrier and wheel bearings.
I wondered why my axle kept coming loose, as I kept tightening it to the
detriment of the bearing, until eventually the penny dropped.
