What's that rattling noise?

No, seriously. Coming back on the R1 I could hear a rattling noise emanating
from below. In synch with the engine but more rattle-y coming from roughly
where I'd imagine the camchain to be. Bearing in mind it's got about 1700 km
on the clock what could it be?

    The camchain?

Why would a nearly new camchain rattle? I'm not saying it wouldn't, just
don't know enough about them and I want to go back to the dealer pretending
    I know something about it.

Does the R1 have EXUP valves?...I assume so... If so, could be seizing/servo
cables knackered in some way.... If so, its a rather quick and cheap fix to
get it stripped and lubed, and a very expensive job if its left and the
    servo motors burn out.

This is what happened to my litre fazer, and it cost £400 in parts alone :-(

But in the best traditions of UKRM, Im probably fucking wrong...

It could be the camchain, but equally it might just be that the valve
clearances need doing as they've opened up a bit too much.

I had a rattle associated with the EXUP-equivalent on my 'blade - it
was rattly OK, but not even close to being "in synch(sic) with the
    engine".

Yeah. I'll add it to my list of scary things that can go wrong.

They'd have to REALLY need doing to make this loud a rattle. Almost
cartoonesque characatured clearances such as you might find on...oh forget
    it, I can't be bothered.

Try checking all screws around the engine and carbs are tightened, sometimes
    that'll create a "Death rattle".

I can't believe manufacturers went back to using camchains after the
resounding success of the cam gear train..
