What's happened to all the BMW K-series?

A friend and I did that in 1990. We got haggling over a R100RT and a
R80RT, yes the shop was looking at selling to new beemers in one go.
Matey in the shop slowly dropped his price ... 5% .... 7% .... 7% and
free luggage etc. When we went into the office, he was starting to sweat
that he may make a mess and we'd walk, we'd got to 12%. We pushed for
17.5% and he wouldn't budge, so several bundles of fresh promissory
notes were dropped on his desk. IIRC, we got 17.5%, luggage, free
servicing including labour for a year. The bikes were to be collected
the following weekend and we departed to the Phoenix & Firkin for a
    celebratory quaff or three.

    Just ran an HPI check.

'Data currently held on NMR indicates there may be a mileage
    discrepancy'

And it has had 2 plate changes.

Seller has gone quiet since mailing me some photos last night.

I asked if HPI would show anything nasty....

You would have to dig deeper, maybe an innocent reason such as a speedo
replacement but this does imply higher mileage.
Could just be someone putting a personal plate on then keeping the plate
    when selling the bike.
Hmmmm - more research is needed, could be a bitsa or a ringer.
Start by asking the HPI guys for a full history.

Definitely a big discount even if it checks out OK because you will have
    problems selling it.

The biggie is a Northern Irish plate going on it in Feb. 2004 and it
going back to age-related in August 2004.

My gut feeling on it is that the guy who put the NI plate on it has
clocked and painted it and that it's a starship mileage ex-plod bike.

How long did plod run them for? - would they keep one for 10 years?

Plod would not normally keep a bike that long.
DVLA should be able to give you an ownership history. Could be that an
owner got a job in Belfast, got pissed off, and came home.
First find out from the HPI guys where the discrepancy comes in, could be
something really simple like a mistake.
"May be a mileage discrepancy" implies that it may not be a clear case.
Sometimes you may see a single strange mileage recorded in the middle of
    an otherwise normally increasing series.

  7. Don't think they'd keep 'em that long. And converting an ex-Plod back to
civvie, without it being obvious, is a tough job. Ask Hog.

Painting it right even more so, especially when you have to colour-match
    the luggage.

Best to leave it, anyway. It looked good on paper, or in the electrons,
    at least.

Drop it. You'll find better and though the K series bikes will do
massive mileages you don't want to pay a low mileage price for this
    one.

It might be ex plod or it could just as easily be an ex despatch bike
so just carry on looking and you'll eventually find better.

    Indeed.

It's back to the 60k-odd miler in the main dealership at the moment.

K1100 in LT trim, for around the same money.

At least that has full, documented, history from the one dealer.

Don't put too much in that - the guy I bought the current MX5 from was
looking at another one and the same caveat appeared there. When he
checked the mileage held there against the mileage of the car (against
all old MOTs), the mileage was out by almost a cool 200k IIRC. Not only
that, but supposedly someone managed to cover over 150k within a single
    year, too.
    Now that is not good.

I'd go for the bigger engined bike every day of the week and 60k miles
isn't monstrous mileage when it's got decent history.

If I decide to get rid of the outfit after we've done the Elefant (1)
I'll almost certainly replace it with an 1100 but it'll be an RS
    rather than an LT.

    (1) I think I'll be keeping it for at least another year so I can
indulge in more stupid behaviour without fucking up a decent bike.

    Probably the better choice IMHO.
And that *could* be worth something, at least it'll preclude some dodgy
    antics with the odometer.

As Lozzo and I can confirm this can get rid of a Cat C or D history

Yet another reason to leave it, then.

It most certainly can, two of them on the same vehicle in fact.

I really shouldn't snigger[1], but catching up on the posts in reverse
date/time order really does show that one should never count their
    chickens.

[1] But you are OK, so I don't feel too bad.
