on engine running if one of the vacuum spigots on one of the carbs on a
four cylinder engine had lost its cap, and was thus open to the
    atmosphere?...

    Spike says...
One cylinder runs very lean and runs the risk of holing a piston. At the
very least you may burn out a valve before this happens.

  3. What he said. A blob of chewing gum would serve as a get-you-home,
    though.

What they said, but idling/small throttle would be most affected.
    Maybe the odd backfire too.
