What was the first bike you *really* wanted?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Macie, Oct 25, 2003.

  1. That had exactly the same chassis as the M125, IIRC. A mate had one. The
cylinder barrel was *huge* for a 50.

Puch made some cracking little sport mopeds, a friend of mine had the M50
Sports, it was bigger than the Grand Prix and had a pukka cradle frame.
Lovely little bike, I managed to wheely it up my parents driveway
    (inadvertantly).

Another local yobbo had the bog standard Grand Prix model, but painted it
white and blue with Monza livery, which was odd, as the Monza model was not
(I believe) available in the UK.

  4. Red, it was, with the cylinder quite sharply inclined forward, like a
Fizzie. But with that huge barrel and head it looked like a bigger bike.
    Petroil mix....

Christ, lost portions of my rapidly failing memory are now springing back to
life, I can remember the bloke he bought it from telling him when he was 17
he could drop out the 49cc lump and stick a 125 in it. For a moped it was a
sturdy little bugger, and went quite nicely too (indicated 45mph ISTR).

That's the one, it looked much bigger than the usual Fizzy / AP50 / Gilera /
    Garelli devices.

On ebay a few months back a chap was selling a Gitane 50, a fully faired
race replica jobby, circa 1977 ish, fitted with a 6 speed Minarelli engine.
Chap at my secondary school had one briefly, a work of art in miniature it
was. Try as I might, I was unable to find any info regarding that model on
    the web.

As a lad I coveted the yammie YDS7; I really liked the looks of the
    CB175; I ended up with an FS1E.

At the tender age of 13 or 14, I used to go to Bill Smiths in Liverpool
and slobber over various bits of machinery. They used to have quite a
selection. The usual Jap, a few Wop and others. So, out of all that
early/mid 80s engineering what do you think really caught my eye. And I
was (at the time) amazed that nobody snapped it up. I recall it being
there for quite some time. Something about it really appealed to me. I
wanted it, and would still love one now. Just for memories sake.

    It was a Jawa 500 R.

  13. Snap! Green tank, big shiny air cleaners, sounded like a fighter plane
in 1967. I had to make do with a Thunderbird which was more like a
    tractor than a fighter plane.

I had one. As a 250cc commuter twin, I reckon it was the best choice.
Until the valves started to embed themselves in the head at around 35k
    miles, ISTR.

I'm going to keep the tank from the Bandit. Partly because it looks
    like I've got massive bollocks.
