What was the first bike you *really* wanted?

Hmm, mine was initially a Puch Grand Prix, followed closely by a KH250 (when
    I was a teenager)

Never got either, in fact, never even sat on a KH :(

Latterly, I really wanted a 750 Zephyr as a first bike, but ended up with
the CB (which is an okay machine, I guess).

Heh, I had one of those. It was the one of the first bikes that I
    learned to weld on. :)

  4. OK, but the Zeph is still a bloody fine and fun machine, oddly enough.

    My mate's italjet 50.

And later, when I was out of short trousers, an RD250LC. I wouldn't
    want one now, mind.

Had a puch grand prix as my moped, not the "s" version or the JPS one
either. Just a plain boring orange one. Still got it rusting away in a
shed. Some **** took the plug to use in a rotavator so it'll never run
    again.

Never owned a KH250, a bit too gutless really. The 400 was a lovely
bike (I've had 3 or 4 of those, can't remember). I keep thinking about
getting another KH400 but never quite get around to it.

    True.

Except mine, which had a habit of destroying the left hand cylinder.

Norton Commando in black with gold coachlines. Owned by my Geography
teacher for which he gained much kudos in 1973. I've never found one
that's been well enough screwed together, but perhaps one day. The
closest I ever got was a half-share in a Puch (GP?) in the right
    colour scheme.

That is a real shame, they seem to be very collectible these days. I'd love
to get one for my boy, but the prices are stupid.
ISTR that KH250's had a habit of seizing the middle cylinder, is this true
    or urban myth?

I had a 550 Zephyr. I thought it was a great bike. Mined ewe, the 750
    was better. More poke, etc.

That'd be the model most teenage boys thought had the JPS logo on the side
panel, 'cept when you looked at it closely it was akkshirley "SDP" (Steyr
    Daimler Puch).

    Ahh nostalgia.

  16. A friend's KH250 kept seizing the middle cylinder. After 2 or 3 rebuilds
he finally gave up in disgust when it happened for the final time,
    resulting in a holed piston.

  17. I may be missing something here, but why not buy another plug and see if
    it runs?

  18. The Kawasaki Cognoscenti used to run a harder plug in the middle pot. I
remember I ran B7s on the two outer pots of my H1 and a B8 in the
middle. If I was planning a serious thrape, I went up one grade to B8s
    and a B9.

I fell in lust with the CBX when I saw one outside a tiny bike shop in
Buxton. My mate was buying bits inside, I was dribbling on the
pavement walking around and around this glistening beauty. From every
angle it was gorgeous, from immaculate twinkling headers right back to
    the stacked organ pipe exhausts.

The shop owner came out with my mate and grinned at me, then asked if
I'd like to hear it running - he had just finished restoring it and it
was a thing of great pride and joy to him. Once it fired and warmed a
little, he gave it a handful and it sounded fucking wonderful. "Did
you like that?", he asked. "Come round here then, boys" - and he led
    us round to the workshop.

There was an indistinct shape hunched under a dustsheet in the corner.
Whipping the cover off with a flourish, he revealed a rather tatty
RGV500. Blue, white and yellow, it was - with subtly menacing little
exhausts protruding from unexpected places. "Do you want to hear THIS
one?" he asked - and without waiting, fired it up and gave it a
    serious twist.

Fucking hell, my ears bled. I swear they were still ringing six hours
later after eight pints of anaesthetic.
One day, eh? One fine day ...
