What type of bike do I need?

    What I need
    Kawasaki ER-5
It is 500cc but still learner legal, and a bit more freeway-friendly than a
    250 (especially with a 95kg load :)
If you insist on sticking with a 250, then perhaps a VTR250?

  2. Does Melb have LAMS?

A ZZR250 would prolly be my pick. One of the bigger road 250's.

  3. I agree with the ER5 comment. They're learner legal and ideal for
someone you size. Docile but with a little more grunt than most 250s.
I'm riding one at present and they're a great bike.

    Kind regards

I seem to have started an epic with the discussion on CB250''s on the
    freeway, so I'll start again.

    What I need
    1. 40km each way to work on the freeway (West Gate Fwy & Ring
    Road, Melb.....pretty much flat road)
    2. I weight about 95kg
    3. I want to stick with a 250cc bike, ever after I'm past my P's.
    4. I want an idiot proof bike....don't know much mechanically
    (yet)
    5. Cheap to repair.
    6. Price Range $4000 - $6000

So, can anybody suggest a bike that would suit my needs? I know it
would be better to spend a little more, but my morgate says otherwise
    :)

    Thanks

There's no such thing as an idiot proof bike, scooters may be lower maintenance
than a "real" bike. Having said that there's not a lot in keeping them in
    roadworthy condition.

    On the Parameters above:

    First choices
    GPX250/ ZZR250
    VTR 250
    Spada
    Across

    Second choices
    CBR250 (r or rr)
    ZXR250
    Zeal
    Bandit

The 2nd set only because they'll be marginally dearer to insure, repair, buy and
maintain. I doubt there's a helluva lot in it but there's a little bit.

    3rd set
    2 stroke 250s (NSR/KR1/RGV/RS)

Don't recommend it they're poor commuters, can be expensive to repair and
maintain, and will be dear to insure.

    NO LAM's in Vic.
    Still 250 country.
ZZR250 or for a bit more room and 6K just about enough to buy new, have a
ride on the Korean made 250 Comet, V-twin.
    cheers

    Well, umm, I guess you need a CB250! :)

I'm sorta biased towards the GPX/ZZR twins myself.

Id recommend something like a GSX250 or even a ZZR250 they look better and
have a stronger motor aswell.Personally id stick with the suzuki theyre
always had great motors atleast the few ive owned anyway. For that price you
should be able to pick up something pretty decent.

Yeah I had a 2000 Suzuki Bandit gsxr250 and it did a very quick exceleration
top speed of 165k/hr on the freeway and was always 100% reliable. (some
vibration was felt in the handlebars compared to my current Blackbird.
Nothing to worry about) Never ever had a problem with it. I dont think they
make them anymore. If you're a fat ****, theres no way ill be getting a
cb250. I only way 65kg and have a totally gorgeous body, well thats what
this bloke said to me last night at the pub, anyway.

I thought I did, but it seems that they might be a little gutless on
    the highway........... :)

You need a SPADA - preferably one from Canberra that hasn't had salt
corrosion damage from being too near the ocean.

Yeh "they" keep giving me an ER-5 when my ZX9 is in for a service. Feels a
bit "weird" stepping off the '9, but I agree with your comparison with most
250's. The ER-5 has a fair bit more torque than my ZZR250 ever did making
it much more firendly in traffic and on the highway - doesn't die in the
    arse on hills etc.

Great bike. Pitty they didn't have a LAM's program when I was on my L/P's.
Probably would have bought an ER-5 kept it longer than 6 months off my P's!

No one has mentioned the Suzuki Across, but I think it would do the job for
    you.
