I am looking to get a 1978 GL1000 Goldwing and am curious if there is
anything with that vintage and model of bike and/or engine I should watch
out for? It has 56K on the odometer.

    Thanx...

Listen to how it starts. The starter clutch was some three-ball clutch and
when they go not only are they expensive, but you have to split the case to
    get the thing out.

Documentation of a timing belt change. Also have the owner let it set for a
week on its sidestand and then go and start it . See how much it smokes from
the left cylinder. As it will smoke when started if the rings or valse seals
    are bad.
I had a 77' with 29,000 on it and it smoked when first started. Also, have
you ridden that old of a wing before ? If so, ride it with a passenger and
see how top heavy it is for you. I have short legs (31" inseam) and I never
really felt comfortable stopping in town with it.
Not trying to discorage you from buying it, just make sure it is what you
    want before you buy it.
Maybe try a newer one as they have improved tremendously of the years.

Check the water pump and the stator... Make sure it don't run hot, and make
sure its charging with a meter. also check the underside of the mufflers for
    rust.
