    Power band like a switch, rear wheel trying to over take the front. Wheelies
    everywhere. Back steps out round most corners. Front has very little feel
    due to the long travel suspension.
    Very unreliable (only designed for 4 hour enduro's). Electrics have a mind
    of their own.
    Yadayada ya.

    He was much better at taking pictures than I was. He did some decent
    wheelies but I didn't get them. He got mine without trying and first time.

    That'll be A-level photography paying off then.

    Thanks for the advice, I'll take a look at the 9R's. I do like the look of
    the 7R though.

    together - open-face helmet, goggles, dodgy two-strokes - the truth becomes

    Sounds like the 520 4, and then some.

    How's about switching classes? Get a 4-stroke which will be usable on the
    road, more reliable so will last a lot longer, but can still be raced at
    the weekends.

    Don't the race 4 stroke singles have almost the same limited engine life
    between rebuilds as the 2 strokes?

    Dunno. What do you mean by "race 4 stroke singles"? I was thinking about
    something like the 250 or 400 EXC, but I don't know for sure if there's an
    appropriate class for them. I *think* there is, but my memory can be
    fudge.

    The classes are generally based on your ability, not the bike i.e.
    Sportsman, Clubman, Expert. Any of the competition EXCs, 2T or 4T, will
    be horrible on the road. They vibrate like buggery, have planks for
    seats, need oil changes every few hours (4T) or are premix only (2T -
    apart from the discontinued 200 EGS), & lots & lots of maintenance.

    One of the big 4Ts (520/525) would be fine as a short distance
    supermoto, but nothing like the kind of road bikes Linger's talking
    about. As usual, the only answer is to have at least two bikes.

    I suppose it depends on the roads. I've been using my 250 EXC to commute
    the 6 miles to work for the past 2 months.
    Compared to a sports bike, sure, but mine feels fine.
    Check. Firms up the arse cheeks though.
    They do? Clearly mine isn't a competiton EXC.
    Well sure, but not everyone has that option.

    And I used to use my pushbike to commute the 5 miles to school - which
    has about as much relevance, given the bikes Linger's mentioned in the
    context of this thread.
    I suppose 'need' is a subjective term, but they are very hard on the
    oil due to the tiny amount swilling around in there. I'd change it
    every 500 miles of road use - more frequently when off-roading.
    Not everyone, but Linger does. Replacing the EXC with an old DR for
    around a grand & spending the rest on a 'cosmetically challenged' road
    bike would give him the best of both worlds, given his budget.

    Given that I'm doing it out of choice, and the ZX9 and car remain at home,
    I'd say it's not totally irrelevant. It's just not horrible on the road,
    it's easy to wheelie (it must be if I can do it), it has a suprising
    amount of grip whilst cornering, and having knobblies on means it's fairly
    easy to make it squirm about and provide some extra grin.
