    Or go for a job interview that is/was scheduled for 10 o'clock?

    Phone the gas engineer and say "Make it this afternoon mate, I'll buy
    you some beers for your trouble."

    Then go to the interview, return with 4 cans of beer.

    If he doesn't show up, drink them.
