What should I do / buy?

    Hello all

Business has been brisk, hence my absence, but I now find myself in
need of the collective wisdom of UKRM

My 600 Monster has just gone over 10k. As well as the next service
being due in 2k miles and it being in dire need of a new rear tyre, I
feel that my (ex) 20 stone bulks has reduced the rear shock to a
quivering mess. The brakes are somewhat lacking as well, and the
finish is begining to show wear (surprise)

In short I am feeling a need for something with more brakes, more
    stomp and perhaps different.

Much as I like the bike, I think that there are two options.

    1) Sort the bike, new rear shock, maybe fork re-build, braided hoses,
new cans and jetting. Can't see me getting much change from a couple
of grand (or am I thinkg way OTT)

    2) Trade it for summat else? This has it's attractions. I figure that
I can get between 2.5-3k for it. That means I have an effective
budget of up to 5.5k for a 'new' bike.

    Current favourites are:
Another Monster, 750 or 900 (maybe an S4 if I can find one, but I
    don't fancy the insurance.

Cagive (V)Raptor. Not sure about the spares situation ATM

    Triumph 99g Speed Triple.

Bearing in mind that I am over 6'4", the monster is about as small as
    I want to get physically.

I do occasional motorway stuff, so weather protection is not as
important as good back road manners, and oomph for the rapid
overtakes. Also, I want better brakes.
I do some London riding, but pretty much on the main routes in / out.

I'm not really into Sport bikes (did I hear Gixer thou from the
back?). I might go for a sport tourer, but I doubt it.

Anything else I should be looking at? Anything I should drop from the
    list.

    TIA

Think that might be a bit of a too large step. Not least in terms of
insurance. (though I've not actually looked) Not really comfortable
with a bike with an engine larger than my wife's SOC.....

Though I might well give one a spin if I see one

That has a certain appeal. Thought it would be somewhat out of my
    price bracket though?

I meant they look like "large bloke's" bikes. They're very popular
with "the larger monsieur" in France.
no. I think they're considered "crap" by the british bike press
because they don't fit into any particular pigeonhole. If I'd a
bottomless pit of money, I'd have one myself for pottering around on,
'cos I think they look cool.

There's a really nice looking one which potters about round here. Black
with chromey bits and some high level carbon pipes on it. Sounds nice too.

Oh she has a bigger car already. Although it *is* old it's only shite
to those that know little / nothing about them :)

well, I'd "believed the crap" about them being crap until I saw a load
of them in France in August - they do look and sound great, and
    they're very cheap.

Another suggestion for Catman, mind: Hornet 900...

    ah. Well, although I've not ridden a Hornet 900, I'd say it's a
different kettle of fish entirely from a Bandit. I only mentioned them
because I noticed that Lloyd Coopers are selling them for 650 under
list at 5499, which was your budget. They've got Africa Twins at that
price too, which might be another good choice for someone your size...
