Okay, since someone else thought today was a good day to ask silly questions I thought I would ask my own. <g> First a little background. While I would have rather gone to work for a Honda dealership as a mechanic the first one that would give me a chance was a Harley shop in Alaska. I spent the better part of a year working for them until the Air Force made us leave Alaska and sent us to Virginia. Once here I was picked up by another Harley shop that was about 35 miles away (the local Honda dealer didn't want to talk to me) and continued working for them for a year till I decided to quit to be a Mr. Mom. That was a year and a half ago. A couple of months back I decided to stop by a shop that is much closer then the last place I worked (it's the closest bike shop to where I live) and asked them if they needed a mechanic. They sold ATV's and PWC's along with motorcycles. Since it was well in to summer I figured it was a long shot but it turned out they did need one and I was hired. They already have two other guys to do the ATV and watercraft work so I am their primary street bike guy. I work on their lineup of Victory's along with custom choppers by Swift and Ironworks which are powered by either S&S or Rev-Tech copies of the Harley Evo engine. Plus I still have all my tools from working on Harleys and have helped a lot of people with mods to their Harleys when ever I can. So I still have a tendency to think of myself as being a Harley mechanic even though I no longer work for a Harley dealership. Anyhow, the other day I was out riding with a friend of mine. I was riding my '81 Honda GL500 while my friend was on a Kawasaki 650 dual sport (KLR650?). While we were getting fuel a gent riding an Evo powered Harley Softail pulled up to the pump on the other side. After looking over his bike I complemented the guy on some of the mods he had done and asked him a question. He gave me a look as if to say "why is this Jap riding bozo bothering me?". To put him at ease I added that I was a Harley mechanic and was trying to build a Harley Sportail. My friend spoke up and said I was a Victory mechanic and not a Harley mechanic anymore. This got the other guy's attention and he asked me which of the local Harley dealers did I work for. It turned out he got his bike from the same place while I worked there and he was happy with the service he has had done by them. Okay, now on to my trick question. <g> Can I still call myself a Harley mechanic since I work on Evo copies in custom choppers or have I lost the right to do that since the dealership I now work for is mainly a Victory shop? <sfsf> Ruppster sportster at dodge-semis dot com
