Out of idle curiosity I am interested in what kind of odd things people keep
in their toolboxes or close by because they are particularly useful even
though they were never designed to be used as tools. For example, I have
become very fond of an old CX500 fork stanchion that works a treat as an
extender bar for spanners and socket handles - ideal for those hard to move
nuts and (so far) completely unbendable. What inventive uses have people
found for other spare bits and pieces?

  2. I keep a spare rear wheel spindle for a Honda CD175.

If I'm removing a swingarm pivot, or another wheel spindle, I use it as
    a drift.

It's particularly useful if I only want to remove one part of a rerar
wheel assembly, like a brake plate or caliper bearing plate, because I
knock it in from one side, the genuine spindle comes out, and I leve the
CD175 spindle part-in, so all the silly things like chain adjusters and
spacers don't fall out of place.

Spare inspection pit - you never know when it will come in useful

.... and when not in use, it folds away into virtually nothing, after
    all, it's just a hole

Moto Guzzi fork stanchion and a slightly smaller MZ one - for stuff.

MZ issue C spanner - does loads.

6" length of plastic curtain track - holds MZ pistons in position when
fitting gudgeon pins. Although now usurped by the "Eaton Inserter".

Various dead bearing races used as seal drifts.

    Various spindles used as drifts.

Assorted bits of dexion for locking engines.

Thin aluminium strips for locking MZ engines.

There're the big lumps of wood (about 12" by 18" by 2-3" thick)
acquired off a building site that act as chocks, supports, chopping
blocks, very short stools, mini workbenches and even soft mallets when
    there's nothing else to hand.

    That's about it, really.
