Ping *is* a Unix command, just as /usr/bin/java is a Unix command. It's
a program compiled to run on Unix. It's not a native shell command, but
an external program compiled to run on Unix. Each OS/Computer
manufacturer, since ICMP (and Ping in particular) is based on open
standards, is free to implememnt their own version or release of Ping.
The fact that it is one of many, many open-standard software programs
(tools, utilities, etc), allows uniformity across many manufacturers of
systems and OSes.

after Brainless backed out, I decided to take it easy that year and rode
the 12 hour 500 mile Waltz for the very first time it was offered in the
history of the Waltz. I'd originally planned on riding the old /5 but
the weather wasn't for that; I see no need to dirty up a trophy show
bike.

I didn't even leave the start until around 10AM (start time was 7AM) and
still finished with plenty of miles over the 500 minimum, almost plus
10%. 0 points was from penalty time subtracting bonus points, to where
I actually scored in the negative numbers LOL but I didn't DNF like
1/4 of the rally did. I basically rode a 12 hour rally in 9 hours,
finished with plenty of surplus miles and got a trophy for my efforts.
Only a Moron would try to ride a 12 hour rally in 9 hours and then
actually succeed in doing it. It's a nice trophy, I like it. ROFL

 

If you're going to misquote me, please try to have the same flair and
panache as your dad, ok? I never explained which layer in which things
reside. What I said what that, when explaining ping and ICMP to a
*layman*, Albert's explaination of "Ping *is* ICMP" is *FUNCTIONALLY*
correct. In layman's terms... those'd be the people who neither
understand nor care about stacked network layering and where protocols
lie in that stack vs. the utilities that *use* those protocols.

to a layman, "Send an ICMP packet to address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" is
functionally equivalent to "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" and that was my
point.

It's all about the reading comprehension.

I'm well aware of what Java is... it's a high level programming
language. I write in it all the time, dunce. Several other languages as
well. It's what I do for a living.

However, depending on platforms, c:\...\java.exe or /usr/bin/.../java
are *commands* that execute the Java Virtual Machine.

Perl is a language, again, use it frequently. However, again,
/usr/bin/perl is the command that executes the Perl Interpreter.
