What duz Ping mean

Discussion in 'Texas Bikers' started by BJayKana, Jun 27, 2005.

  1. From www.worldwidewords.org

"The origin is in the Latin word libra, which could mean both balance
scales (hence the symbol for the astrological sign Libra, which was
named after a constellation that was thought to resemble scales) and
also a pound weight, for which the full expression was libra pondo,
the second word being the origin of our pound."

Give the young man a cigar... hmmm.. I bet Nurick told you that, after he
    googled it, of course..

  3. No, but I will admit that I Googled it. Like you, I thought it was an
interesting question, and I didn't know the answer off the top of my
head. That's why I quoted the website where I found the history of
    the abbreviation.

Google was the quickest way to find out, since I was already at my
computer, but my dictionary says the same thing - that the
abbreviation is from the Latin "libra".

Nurick is still googling, of course.. <grin> I connected the abbreviation
... whew... lotta years ago.. I'd never connected it, because it was just one
of those things that doesn't require much thought.. there it is on packages
    in stores..

When I was learning to speak spanish, all of a sudden it hit me and all
became clear.. Yep.. you are right, it comes from the latin word "libra"..

No, it looks to be an Amazon offering for a hardbound reference
on "The History of Ping". I guess I would have never thought that
such a reference would have existed. More specifically, just how
many copies of "The History of Ping" would you think have been
    purchased?

Also, I'm not taking sides, nor am I a TCP/IP/Unix guru, but I really
would have thought that ping was universal across many platforms.

Or, stated more correctly, although the command probably once did
belong to Unix, because of the proliferation of TCP/IP, would no
longer be considered Unix owned. But, I guess the same could be
said of a myriad of similar commands, like nslookup etc. Maybe a
bad example, although ping has been implemented on every TCP/IP
platform I've dealt with, nslookup has not.

Even more amazing, at least to me, is that you guys have managed to
project this topic into another major argument.

I guess we'll soon be seeing ping'd threats being hurled, and offers to
"ping" circles around one another at some common showdown site,
in the country. This should be quite entertaining. <g>

hehehe.. Don't get all excited, Gary.. It all boils down to the usenet
wizards getting all bolluxed up in their trivia and then trying to
re-habilitate themselves ..Ho Hum.. Some take the graceful way out and just
disappear for a while, but Nurick just keeps coming back for more.. I guess
it's the hazards of usenet.. sometimes these fellers just get backed into
corners that is hard to get out of..Cheers..

BTW... The "ping" thing was around during the early sonar days aboard ship..
That was in the early fifties.. LOL... Go figure..

You are completely wrong, Brian. Remind me never to hire anyone from
Colonial Networks. It's just you, right?

Ping was originally written by Mike Muus. He and I both worked at the
Army Research Lab. Ping, originally written for UNIX, relied on ICMP
echo requests and echo responses. It was written using raw sockets to
run over IP. If you have someone show you a ping packet, you'll see
that the protocol field specified in the IP header is not TCP. It's
ICMP. ICMP is a *peer* layer 4 protocol to TCP. To say ping is a TCP
command is *completely* wrong. You do hear that a lot, don't you?
    LOL. Idiot.

Remind me never to hire anyone from Colonial Networks. Those idiots
    don't have a clue.

Albert is right. Ping was written by a co-worker of mine at the Army
Research Lab. It was originally written for Unix and then ported to
many other operating systems. Ping uses ICMP which is a peer layer 4
protocol to TCP. It is not TCP. You, as is most often the case, have
no idea what you're babbling on about.

At Colonial Networks, are you taking money for having no idea what
you're talking about, or is it just a failed business/tax shelter?

Oh, please do. I learn stuff reading your posts. Today I learned that
donkies are carnivorous. I just saw a jackass (that would be you) eat a
    whole lot of crow.

Ping is not a TCP command. Ping does not involve TCP in any way. Ping
is a peer layer 4 protocol to TCP, just like UDP. Have someone explain
IP headers to you, with particular attention to the protocol field.
Then, have them explain the difference between a TCP packet and an ICMP
packet. I don't have much hope you'll understand, and that's why *I* am
going to boycott Colonial Networks forever. I only do business with
companies whose representatives can hold the most basic conversations
about networks without screwing it all up.

    the past tense. He's dead.
